From the book:
Ron Clarke saw a shadowy figure running toward the helicopter from the right. He wasn’t certain if it was the downed air force pilot or a Vietcong. At the same time, George Armstrong, manning the machine gun in the forward left personnel door, shouted, “Here they come—let’s get out of here.” He opened fire with his M60 [on enemy soldiers running] toward the helicopter. . . .
“Full power,” Clarke shouted to [copilot Jerry] Smith, who shoved the two engine throttles to the stops. Clarke eased up on the collective pitch lever, and the helicopter began to get light on the wheels.
Back aft, [Jimmy] Conrad identified the running man as friendly and watched him dive past head first, sliding across the cabin deck on thousands of empty 7.62mm shell casings like the floor was covered with ball bearings. He fetched up under the troop seat . . . grabbing the bench leg to stop from slipping down the tilted deck.
As the helicopter accelerated and then climbed . . . the adrenaline-charged helicopter crew began to realize that they were safe and had somehow escaped death or worse.

I recommend this excellent history and technical story.

This is an excellent history and technical book! As a previous Vietnam Vet flying the HH-43B Local Base Rescue helicopter, I personally know several of the pilots and PJ's mentioned in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in not only the role of all the services, but in the cost in crews and aircraft involved in the war. It also explains the tactics used and how the changes to helicopter helped change the tactics as well as the role of the A-1's. I highly recommend this book for the history if nothing else.

Just Too Much

Pilots specializing in search and rescue have to be some of the most fearless in the armed forces. They are often in unarmed, or poorly armed, aircraft, their intentions and flight path are well known to the enemy, and their aircraft are some of the least capable to maneuver or evade. This book is a journal of these brave pilots.
=== The Good Stuff ===
* Each of the stories is anywhere from a couple paragraphs to a couple pages in length, and George Galdorisi does a nice job of telling their story in simple, yet complete descriptions. The author writes in an easy-to-read style, and gives the reader enough information to appreciate the skills required and dangers faced during the rescue.
* There is a nice mix of stories, ranging from WWI through modern battles, and include rescues at sea, on land, and even a fair number of unsuccessful efforts. Each of them seem well-researched and about as accurate as possible given the nature of the story.
* The book is somewhat enraging as it seems to be a familiar story that American armed forces always seemed to forget about the search-and-rescue requirements of conflicts until they were well underway. In the interim, the effort relied on the sheer determination of pilots and groundcrews to made do with a motley collection of assets. Galdorisi includes stories of rescues in obsolete and broken down aircraft, and any number of home-made pieces of equipment installed on them.
=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===
* I almost feel guilty about writing this, but after the first fifty stories, the book becomes boring. There is just no way to keep retelling the same basic story and keep it interesting, and while each tale is a remarkable story of bravery and determination, after a while they all run together.
* Galdorisi misses the chance to take a step back and analyze what is going on. For example, he makes much of how US pilots in WWII were much more valued by their armed forces than those of Japan. The Japanese often undertook no search and rescue efforts for their pilots. This leads to two obvious questions.
First, the American search and rescue efforts (especially in the early years of the war) were expensive in terms of loss of irreplaceable aircraft and additional lost pilots. Aside from the "humanitarian" side of things, did the S&R efforts make sense from a purely military viewpoint?
Second, were there added benefits to a pilot knowing that S&R pilots were willing to risk life and limb to save them. In other words, were pilots more effective and daring because they knew that if they were shot down behind enemy lines a rescue effort would be made? This seems especially an important topic in the Viet Nam war, where a pilot left on the ground was not likely to be well treated.
Instead of attempting to provide an analysis of search and rescue, Galdorisi simply relates tale after tale of heroics.
* The author is prone to using "jargon" without well defining it. As an example, he refers to helicopters by their service names (H3, H5), but never really defines what they are, or what their capabilities and vulnerabilities are. Even worse, he gets the reader wrapped up in the different names different services used for the same helicopter. It became quite confusing.
=== Summary ===
I enjoyed the first hundred pages of the book, but soon grew tired of it, and ended up only skimming the last half of the book. Normally I finish every book I start, but I simply can not read page after page of "facts" that do not lead to any deeper understanding of what is going on. I'd say the book is worthwhile to skim, but reading the entire work is a tough task.

The book tells of the history of combat search and rescue from interduction of airplanes to WW 1, WW 2, Korea, Vietnam, and beyond. The helicopter being the greatest addition to the job. The book tells of rescue attempts, successes, failures and the lessons learned. The courage of the rescuers during rescue attempts, in itself, is worth reading about. Interesting well told history of the growth of air rescue. Well worth your time.
