Praise for 2E: "This book...represents a thorough and well-written presentation of the strategies, processes, and interactions necessary for the effective clinical interview...highly recommended..." (Albert B. Hood, University of Iowa for APA Review of Books)
 Review
"The fourth edition of this classic by John and Rita Sommers-Flanagan is simply a triumph! This book has both extraordinary depth and breadth. The authors do an exceptional job of describing mundane--but critical--details of learning to interview while still capturing and articulating the essential "big picture" aspects of contemporary clinical interviewing. The book has it all: theory, research, case material, and the essential "how to's", all presented in an accessible and lively format. It is hard to imagine a better book for beginning clinicians."
—David A. Jobes, Ph.D., ABPP, Professor of Psychology, Co-Director of Clinical Training, Catholic University of America, Washington, DC
"Thorough, thoughtful, and well-written, John and Rita Sommers-Flanagan do an outstanding job demonstrating the scientist-practitioner model in action. The text provides excellent coverage of the basic skills involved in clinical interviewing, and the material is brought to life through an engaging literary style, numerous case examples, and informative and amusing anecdotes. The authors also confront important ethical issues pertaining to clinical interviewing, such as informed consent, confidentiality and its limits, and documentation according to HIPAA standards. The review of the literature is current, summarizing many contemporary issues and controversies, such as revisions to be included in DSM-V."
—James C. Overholser, Ph.D., ABPP; Professor of Psychology, Director of Clinical Training, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH; Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Contemporary Psychotherapy
"It is a delight to see the 4th Edition of the Sommers-Flanagan's excellent work. They understand counseling and therapy, their writing is clear, and this book will be enjoyed by students and faculty alike."
—Allen E. Ivey, Ed.D., ABPP; Professor Emeritus, University of Massachusetts, Amherst; President, Microtraining Associates, Inc.
 From the Publisher
One of the best books on clinical interviewing just got better. The increased emphasis on multicultural issues and new sections on the science of interviewing and intake report writing are particularly welcome additions.
This is easily one of the best books on clinical interviewing available and makes an outstanding text for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in the helping professions. In successfully blending theory, scholarly research, and richly illustrated clinical examples, the authors bring the material to life.
The book stands out in the competitive field of clinical interviewing texts. In addition to providing invaluable information on basic interviewing skills, it addresses advanced topics such as assessment, treatment planning, and important multicultural issues.
Exceptionally clear and well-written, this book provides beginning graduate students in the helping professions with invaluable information on learning how to conduct effective clinical interviews. Highly recommended.
A worthwhile addition to the library of any helping professional, this book offers much more than most beginning-level texts on helping skills. Chapters on suicide assessment, conducting effective mental status examinations, diagnosis and treatment planning, interviewing children and families, and multicultural issues set it apart from similar texts. --Eric R. Dahlen, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, University of Southern Mississippi

 Good Introduction to the Practice!
 By Lauren A
I'm taking a undergraduate course in Clinical Interview & Counseling as I prepare for my future studies in Clinical Psychology and practice and this was our textbook.
It doesn't focus on a method of therapy (cognitive-behavioral, psychoanalytic, etc), rather it examines techniques for listening to clients, talking and developing client-therapist relationships, preparing intake reports, conducting suicide assessments interviews, dealing with resistant clients, understanding diverse/multicultural patients and other dynamics of working in a clinical setting.
The DVD was incredibly helpful in that it showed examples of all the techniques discussed and sometimes was an easy way to concisely explain a large chapter.
It is a big book with a lot of information, so it's not a quick or easy read, but it can be very helpful in getting a broad introduction to the practice of clinical interviewing and is helpful.

Invaluable text book for counseling students
 By M. Baxani
It is rare to find a text book that is not a chore to read, but this is one of them! The authors write in a very engaging manner, and the frequent bursts of humor make reading it a real pleasure. It takes readers through all the steps of interviewing, at a perfect pace, so that readers are not overwhelmed with information, but are able to absorb it, and develop their skills gradually. It also discusses in depth how to work with particular populations, including young clients, culturally diverse clients, and couples. The skills and techniques are discussed in a way that is is easy for readers to grasp and apply to their work. I would highly recommend this book for all students in the helping professions field. It is the most useful book I read during graduate school and I will always refer back to it throughout my career.

 Great Reference Book
 By norman floyd
This is another book in which I used for my Master's; it is very detailed and must have if you are considering entering the "helping profession." It goes into valuable skills for interviewing. My path did not lead to becoming a clinical psychologist, but the material in which I was required to read trained me from that prospective, as the interview, if done properly will be most helpful in establishing rapport. The book discusses items, such as Theoritical Orientations, as this becomes most important as different schools of thought will approach the same issue but only from their prospective,i.e, Cognitive Behavior Therapy vs. Transactional Psychology. Consequently, if say for instance, you the intervier were called before a panel and explained why you approached an issue a certain way. It would be related to your school of training. I hope this makes sense. It will be a valuable reference in the field of Sociology and /or Psychology for sure!!!
