About the Author
OSAMU A. WAKITA, Hon. AIA, is Professor of Architecture and Department Chair of Architecture at Los Angeles Harbor College. He has been involved in architectural education since 1958. He is a recipient of the California Council of the American Institute of Architects' prestigious Outstanding Architectural Educators Award and is listed in the Council Generals Reference as one of the leading authorities in perspective drawing. He also designs a number of residences each year.

RICHARD M. LINDE, AIA, is a licensed architect in California, Arizona, and Hawaii, and president of his own architectural firm, Richard M. Linde & Associates, Inc. He has provided architectural services internationally and in the various states in which he is licensed to practice. He is an authority on industrialized housing and is a past president of the American Institute of Architects, Cabrillo, California chapter.
Both have also coauthored The Professional Practice of Architectural Detailing, Third Edition, published by Wiley.

From both the office and academia...

I'm very surprised at the two star review below. This book is one of the most comprehensive and updated books on the topic of architectural working drawings to date. Each chapter is a literal list of things to do and strategies for preparing a full set of construction documents. There is even a CAD chapter and nearly 500 new CAD illustrations. Also, an appendix is available on the publishers website that has a comprehensive amount of CAD information. If you want more CAD information, google search "National CAD Standard". You're money is well spent on this book; look at the number of people who purchase it above 50%+ of the people who looked at this book and all others on the topic. Don't hesitate to buy it now :)

Last thing, Dr. Wakita's other books are just as informative. Check out "The Professional Practice of Architectural Detailing" for a well packed book of drawings and strategies.

Excellent Book

To chime in with the other reviewers, I am not exactly sure what is up with the one bad review, this book is excellent. I have read this book in its entirety and found that is very rich in content. The first section of the book covers various cad standards and conventions, however it is the latter part of the book that is pure gold. The book lays out the entire process of creating (as the name implies) architectural working drawings, and even gives examples of the development of the working drawings for various buildings of different constructions. It is in no way "out dated", some of the references to certain software and drafting technologies may be a bit stale, but the information contained in the book is timeless and applicable to both manual drafting, and CAD. In addition to this book I would also recommend the book on architectural detailing by the same author, as the two books make a good team.

This textbook is actually really enjoyable to read and is very easy to understand. As a professional practice guide, it is immensely helpful. Definitely worth the price and worth spending some time reading it; the author is very funny, although the graphics could be a bit better.

Fantastic survey of English literature

I purchased this book to get an overview of the important authors and movements in English literature. From Beowulf to the 21st century, all the important authors and works are included. But the most rewarding part about the book is that it does a fantastic job of putting the important authors and movements in their historical context.

For example, Shakespeare is significant not only because of the genius of his plays but because they reflect Britain's transition from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern period. And instead of simply stating how great an author Jane Austen is, this book explains the importance of her works appearing on the eve of the Industrial Revolution in Britain.

The book also does a great job of summarizing and breaking down major works (like Robinson Crusoe, typically viewed as the first "true" novel) as well as major authors (Wordsworth, Austen, Lord Byron, Pope, Swift, etc.), dedicating as much as three pages detailing a single poet or major work. Even if you haven't read classics like Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Paradise Lost or The Faerie Queene, you'll feel like you did after reading this book. This is a fantastic book I will refer back to for many years, perhaps decades, to come.

By the way, Amazon's description is incorrect. The book is roughly 290 pages (not including the index), not 500+.

Remarkable and ambitious publication

Produced by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology as a companion to a field guide, this remarkable two-CD set is unlike any other nature guide yet published. It is an audio guide to mammals, and only mammals, of the rainforests of the New World.
As the hot spots of the world's bioversity, rainforests have gotten lots of attention from naturalists and adventurous eco-tourists, who want to explore these green worlds for themselves. There have been countless field guides (both printed and audio) to birds in various parts of the New World tropics, but this audio guide exposes the voices of rainforest mammals, many of them retiring and rarely seen in the thick foliage, for study and appreciation.
The first disc is brief (about 40 minutes), but sound recordings of a lot of these mammals are not easily obtained. Over 50 species give voice to their unique sounds. Opossums snort and grunt, jaguars make a sound like someone sawing on a log, tapirs whistle like birds. There is even a recording of a river dolphin spouting, the sudden explosive noise almost out of place among the other jungle sounds.
The second disc, longer in length, features the most vocal of the rainforest mammals, the primates. Some of these produce sounds that could easily be mistaken for the sounds of other creatures. For example, some of the smaller monkeys, like the tamarins, produces squeaks and chitters that are surprisingly birdlike. The night monkey, calling after dark when it would probably never be seen, hoots exactly like an owl. The loudest of the rainforest monkeys, the howlers, produce roars of such intensity that they will literally frighten anyone who visits the rainforest but does not know that these are the sounds of harmless vegetarians.
"Sounds of Neotropical Rainforest Mammals" is off the beaten track, to be sure, but if you are traveling to the tropics anytime soon, I strongly recommend it. Even if you're not, I recommend it anyway. You haven't really lived until you've startled your neighbors with the loud, cackling chorus of the dusky titi monkey.

One of my favorite CDs

This 2 CD set has sounds of 109 species, all of these species live in the rainforests of the New World. Disk 1 has a very large variety of mammal calls, some of these you wouldn't think would be made by that animal. For example, the Bush Dog makes a high squeaking sound. Other sounds you hear on this disk include: bats squeaking, squirrels chattering, anteaters snorting and screetching, etc. Disk 2 only has primate calls on it. The second disk also has some interesting sounds such as howler monkeys roaring, tamarins and marmosets chirping, night monkeys hooting, and much more.

You need to get this CD!

The perfect book for type-A *and* type-B parents

As a parent, I'm kind of anti-schedule. I always hated being kept to a strict eating and sleeping schedule as a kid, and I think that's why I've always resisted putting my kids on schedules. My basic philosophy is: When you're hungry, you should eat. When you're tired, you should sleep.

After my third baby was born last year, I struggled to get into a groove, especially with the toddler and newborn and what they needed from me. When the newborn was ready for a nap, the toddler was demanding food, and vice versa. And so I went searching for help and came across this book. Given my philosophy on schedules for kids, I was reluctant to read this book.

But I'm so glad I did. This book gave me the straightforward, common-sense encouragement I needed in order to do what works best for my family. If you're worried this book will be all structure and rules, don't be. The whole idea of working with routines and rhythms is that you follow a basic flow for your day and don't stress about feeding the kids at 11:49 am instead of 11:35 am.

One of my favorite, favorite parts of the book is all the sample schedules! They really helped me see how my family can structure a typical day, and I still find myself referring back to the schedules every month or so as my youngest gets older and her needs change.

This book has become an invaluable parenting resource to this tired, overwhelmed mama. Highly recommended to all parents.

Great book, not the best quality.

This book is filled with great information regarding routines and schedules for babies aged 6 weeks and older. It also covers having multiple children. I particularly liked having examples for bedtime and mealtimes. Overall I feel like this book will be very useful both now and in the future. I have a five month old son who has been a great sleeper from the start but I felt like I needed more structures for wasn't sure where to start. This book breaks it down to the most simple form and doesn't over complicate the process. I love that! I will have to say the only reason it did not receive 5 stars was because the quality of how the book was made was not at all what I expected for the price. I don't know if it will hold up well after extensive use. It seems to be printed on fairly cheap paper and was oddly formatted and had a blurry cover page and back page, I could barely make out the bio information of the authors. I still plan on keeping this book and utilizing the information as my child continues to grow or we add to our family.

I never imagined that I would be a parent that set a schedule for my children. However, after having a child with SPD and schedules kind of being a very important thing to help with all of our daily activities, I can honestly say that my children on a schedule are better behaved and happier than when we didn't use a schedule.

Whether you know that you want to have a schedule for your child(ren) or you have come to terms with the fact that it might help your child(ren), this book is definitely one for the bookshelf. Not only does it give you sample routine schedules, but they are specific for different ages. It also gives advice on managing the day with multiple children.

Good Introduction to the Practice!

I'm taking a undergraduate course in Clinical Interview & Counseling as I prepare for my future studies in Clinical Psychology and practice and this was our textbook.
It doesn't focus on a method of therapy (cognitive-behavioral, psychoanalytic, etc), rather it examines techniques for listening to clients, talking and developing client-therapist relationships, preparing intake reports, conducting suicide assessments interviews, dealing with resistant clients, understanding diverse/multicultural patients and other dynamics of working in a clinical setting.
The DVD was incredibly helpful in that it showed examples of all the techniques discussed and sometimes was an easy way to concisely explain a large chapter.
It is a big book with a lot of information, so it's not a quick or easy read, but it can be very helpful in getting a broad introduction to the practice of clinical interviewing and is helpful.

Invaluable text book for counseling students

It is rare to find a text book that is not a chore to read, but this is one of them! The authors write in a very engaging manner, and the frequent bursts of humor make reading it a real pleasure. It takes readers through all the steps of interviewing, at a perfect pace, so that readers are not overwhelmed with information, but are able to absorb it, and develop their skills gradually. It also discusses in depth how to work with particular populations, including young clients, culturally diverse clients, and couples. The skills and techniques are discussed in a way that is is easy for readers to grasp and apply to their work. I would highly recommend this book for all students in the helping professions field. It is the most useful book I read during graduate school and I will always refer back to it throughout my career.

Great Reference Book

This is another book in which I used for my Master's; it is very detailed and must have if you are considering entering the "helping profession." It goes into valuable skills for interviewing. My path did not lead to becoming a clinical psychologist, but the material in which I was required to read trained me from that prospective, as the interview, if done properly will be most helpful in establishing rapport. The book discusses items, such as Theoritical Orientations, as this becomes most important as different schools of thought will approach the same issue but only from their prospective,i.e, Cognitive Behavior Therapy vs. Transactional Psychology. Consequently, if say for instance, you the intervier were called before a panel and explained why you approached an issue a certain way. It would be related to your school of training. I hope this makes sense. It will be a valuable reference in the field of Sociology and /or Psychology for sure!!!

Das geschieht zum einen durch eine gut verst�ndliche theoretische Darstellung, aber besonders auch durch die zahlreichen praktischen Beispiele, Beispielrechnungen und Fallstudien,� die dem Leser eine w�nschenswerte Vertiefung der Theorie in der praktischen Umsetzung erm�glichen. St�rf�lle in technischen Anlagen sind Zufallsereignisse; deshalb kann man sie nicht g�nzlich vermeiden. Wohl aber lassen sich die Wahrscheinlichkeit ihres Auftretens und das Schadensausma� verringern. Im Buch werden ausgehend von Gef�hrdungen durch Stoffe und Betriebsbedingungen m�gliche technische und organisatorische Ma�nahmen �aufgezeigt, Gef�hrdungen zu mindern. Qualitative Analysemethoden zum Auffinden von Schwachstellen und zur Erh�hung der Sicherheit sowie Modelle zur Absch�tzung von St�rfallfolgen werden dargestellt. �Die quantitative Bewertung der Wirksamkeit von Ma�nahmen zur Verbesserung von Anlagentechnik und Sicherheit wird erl�utert.� Dabei spielen Unsicherheiten eine Rolle; sie folgen� aus dem Zufallscharakter des St�rfalls und aus Kenntnisl�cken bei einigen der zu behandelnden Ph�nomene.
