In this full and highly readable account, former Washington Post correspondent John Burgess traces the impact of the great inscription, which was carved onto a sandstone monolith around 1052 AD, abandoned to the wild for centuries, then decoded by French colonialists. He relates the temple’s surprise emergence in 1979 as a haven for Cambodian refugees and resistance fighters during the war in their homeland. Today Sdok Kok Thom is again at peace, its mission of preserving history accomplished.
Including photographs of the temple, past and present, Refugee Camp 007 and its refugees and militias; extracts from previously unpublished letters of French savant �tienne Aymonier, the inscription’s first translator, written during his months of travels around Cambodia in 1882-1885; a revised English translation of the full inscription by the University of Hawaii linguists Chhany Sak-Humphry and Philip N. Jenner; a glossary of terms; and suggested further readings.

About the Author
John Burgess is a former 'Washington Post' foreign correspondent with much experience in Southeast Asia. He first saw Sdok Kok Thom in 1979 while covering the Cambodian refugee exodus that followed the overthrow of the Khmer Rouge. More recently, he spent two years running down the history of the temple, its people ancient and modern, and its remarkable inscription. He lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife Karen.

One Hindu Brahmin's story, recorded on stone.

Very good, rare book on Cambodia.
How the small temple on the Thai-Cambodian Border was restored (it was a ruin when John Burgess first ran into it while covering the Cambodian refugee situation near Aranyaprathet) is also a great success story in itself.
We need more books like this.

Before you go to south east Asia

Before you visit Thailand or Cambodia you should read this book. Burgess, a former assistant foreign editor for the Washington Post, who spent part of his youth in Thailand brings to life the ruins that almost every tourist visits. He uses a stone tablet as a vehicle to explain the history of the area and the detective work still underway to fill in the gaps of our knowledge.

Facinating

John Burgess did a fine job here. STORIES IN STONE is a fascinating glimpse into ancient Khmer life and the temples they left behind.
It made me want to grab John's book, a small duffel and head for the Thai/Cambodian border.
