EXCELLENT

Ever since I came across the New Oxford Picture Dictionary 2 years ago, I have been a fan. I like its presentation better than any other picture dictionary I've seen. This is a wonderful new edition of only the most basic vocabulary; excellent for someone brand new to English. Oxford's other picture dictionaries are more thorough, but can be overwhelming for the same reason. This is what it promises: basic. There are minor changes from the first edition, such as some illustrations, but both the 1st and 2nd editions are excellent teaching tools for the ESL professional, or learning tools for self-taught students.

P.S. I wish the other reviewers hadn't rated it so poorly. This is the MONOLINGUAL edition (English only), not Creole. Hopefully Amazon will sort out the confusion.

Excellent book for beginning English speakers

My wife is from China, and with this book is able to see and read and say the proper names for whatever she is seeing. It has room by the names for her to write in Chinese characters how to pronounce the English word. One of the most helpful things we've found to help her learn English. I would recommend it for anyone speaking any language who wants to learn English.

Oxford picture encyclopedias are terrific!

What can I say? My adult ESL students love this book. As with others in the Oxford series, the pictures are very high quality, geared toward the daily lives of real people in everyday situations. Would recommend without reservation.
Arrived on time, in excellent (brand new) condition. Would purchase from this seller again.

Simply good Biblical truths that can help you change.

I started "Complete" from the beginning, and am now on the last day. I followed it daily on the website, but also downloaded the book for later reference. (I plan to print it out so I can put written notes on it.) Each day for 21 days, there was a fresh Biblical truth to consider, along with a suggested "Action Point" to do. All good stuff, only requiring an honest heart.

For me, 21 days was just too much in too little time. However, I feel like in order for it to be most effective, I plan on going through it again, at a slower pace.

This would make a good small-group study. I appreciated the network of women on the website. I imagine the same would be true in a group.

I highly recommend "Complete" if you're looking to make a change with a solid Biblical foundation.

A great read for anyone that has an existing LinkedIn profile or needs to get started

I created my LinkedIn profile several years ago. Since then they have made a lot of changes. This book did a great job of helping me improve my profile and explore the new areas of LinkedIn that I didn't even know existed. Since reading this a week ago I have had more quality business interactions on LinkedIn than I have had in the last 2 years.

Dealing mainly with life on board his ships and how he spent the sometimes prolonged spells in port, Ian begins his story with his entrance into the Merchant Navy as a radio officer and continues with his crossing to Canada on the Queen Elizabeth to join the Samite in Baltimore. During the Samite s fifteenmonth voyage, she called at various ports in the USA and North Africa while Ian s next ship, the Samforth, on her ten-month voyage, visited Canada, the USA, Egypt, Arabia, India, Mozambique, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Norway and Finland. Life Aboard a Wartime Liberty Ship is an engaging memoir of a young man s maritime adventures, the people he met, the countries he saw, and the intoxicating thrill of life at sea.

About the Author
On leaving the sea, Ian was employed as a clerk for two years, but disliked the job so much that he left to work at G.P.O. Coast Stations, spending a year at Wick Radio and two years at Portishead Radio. In 1956, he resigned to train as a teacher - at Edinburgh University and Moray House - qualifying in 1961. Four years later, he was promoted to Principal Teacher of Modern Studies at Viewforth School in Kirkcaldy, and retired in 1987. He wrote Dundee Memories, published by Birlinn in 2005, and he has also recorded six audio books, covering all his voyages. He has had articles in Sea Breezes, and, in 1997, won first Prize in the Article Category of the Marine Society's competition.

A story I've never heard before

There are more than enough books about the "fighting Navy" but very few that accurately depict the civvie/military life aboard a cargo carrier. This is about life in the cargo hauling business, those too often ignored contract seamen who carried the means of winning the war. There is little glamour and little battle action, it's more about a young man who went to sea and quietly grew up in the process. I had an uncle in the Merchant Marine; he never talked about what he did and how he lived, now I know. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in WW II.

Not what I expected...

There's very little information about the actual life aboard the ship. Most of it seems to be about his time spent at different ports and his interaction with the citizens. Mildly interesting, but not the exciting war story that I was expecting. I think it would be better to have a title reflecting this. Maybe: "My adventures in Foreign Ports during WWII".

An interesting nautical yarn

One oft times hears of the fighting side of naval actions yet little is paid to the logistical side that is oft time mundane and routine. This is one of those stories. The author while describing the typical activities of day spared the reader the boredom by going into depth about them. His adventures ashore while timid, show that the time in port was not hurry and dash but several days of down time. When there was action it was brief and intense and gave addage to the expression that in a combat theater things are 98% routine and boredom and 2% excitement and terror.

The best book for SSAS 2012 Tabular Model applications

Leo Tachev's book for SSAS 2012 is the best single book that I've found that is worthy as a practical textbook for SSAS BI applications for advanced graduate courses in databases and Business Intelligence in Ivy League universities. Many other books exist on SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS). However, few focus on Tabular Models, which are considerably easier to implement than Multidimensional model applications, and simpler to roll out to new users, modify, and maintain without big investments in training. This book is NOT a survey that dabbles in all Microsoft self-service BI technologies like so many other books. It focuses on Tabular Models (new in SS2012) and PowerPivot.

It covers installation, deployment strategy design, configuration, rollout to users, and management of infrastructure in sufficient detail to get projects done. This author writes from the perspective of finishing many projects and sharing his learnings and wisdom with people new to SSAS and BI.

It does NOT cover Multidimensional Models and MDX in any detail, which is GREAT. Those topics are covered well enough by many other authors. This book is well focused and detailed enough to help you get your projects done. It explains theory, concepts, and nomenclature well. You can go from zero to hero in SSAS by reading and applying this book. Strongly recommended.
