About the Author

Michael Justin Lee was born in Hong Kong and grew up in New York City's Chinatown. A veteran Chartered Financial Analyst, he served as the nation's first Financial Markets Expert-in-Residence in the U.S. Department of Labor. He was previously Practitioner Instructor of Finance in Johns Hopkins University's MBA program, as well as Professorial Lecturer of International Business in Georgetown University’s MS in Foreign Service program. Lee currently serves on the faculties of finance at the University of Maryland and George Mason University.

Wealth and Prosperity? Maybe. Chinese Way? Maybe not.

This is an interesting and helpful book, but there are a few inconsistencies and (I'll call them) contrivances that detract from it to make it only an average book on the "utility in investing" scale. First the contrivances: calling something by its Chinese term doesn't make it a Chinese philosophy and doesn't prove that Western society absorbed it from the East. Most of this book is common sense: Don't waste your money, invest in an education, buy things with value, etc. These only have to do with "The Chinese Way" in that, people need to do these things to be prosperous, whether they are Chinese or not. Then there are the inconsistencies. Page 4: "Your diamonds...are in your own back yard..." Page 54: (the title of one whole section, no less) "Invest Beyond Your Backyard".

With stories and anecdotes from Chinese history, both in the world at large and the particular Chinese-American experience, this book does provide some insight into Eastern philosophy, but it is a tenuous string to Chinese wealth and prosperity (and that assumes one considers the Chinese wealthy and prosperous, which certainly could be an interesting argument). The fact that this book is short, clearly written, and well-organized makes it a worthwhile read. Like most books on investing, however, the reader will have to wade through and weed out the less useful things to get the most from the book.

Interesting and unique insights

Being primarily a business person, I've always been fascinated with China, its people and how they do business. This book provided many interesting and unique insights on how the Chinese people think, what they value and how they view wealth and happiness. I now realize and appreciate how different their views and values are from the west-- refreshingly old world traditional, less superficial. I also particularly enjoyed the author's anecdotes from his family, business and academic life. It kept me engaged from beginning to end.

What a Gifted Professor

I couldn't put this book down. This is a book not only on personal finances, but on life. Professor Lee is an incredibly gifted Professor in the way he articulates ideas into easy-to-understand language. I've had him as a Professor for my investments class at school, you never want to stop listening to this guy and the priceless insight he has. Reading this book put me back in his classroom and brought me the same inspiration the he instills in his students each lecture. If you have any regret after purchasing this book, contact me and I'll buy the book off of you just so I can give it to someone else, it's that good. Professor Lee, keep inspiring your students with your wisdom and charisma, you're changing lives by the second.

The pedestrian third novel in Sniegoski's Remy Chandler series (after 2009's Dancing on the Head of a Pin) finds the Seraphim-turned-PI drawn into the case of a missing little girl with prophetic gifts. Also searching for the child is the biblical character Delilah, now cursed to endless life without love. Naturally, the blind but still powerful Samson also gets drawn into the mix, as do the followers of the ancient god Dagon, leading to an inevitable (and interminable) showdown in Dagon's West Virginia lair. Chandler is a great lead, but the interesting supporting characters take a back seat to the generically villainous Delilah, the blustering Samson, and the missing girl's bland parents. Fans of Chandler will enjoy his developing character, but there's little to distinguish the book within the paranormal PI genre. (Mar.)

Third Chandler Outing Falls Short

Three books into the series now (plus one short story), and I have to be honest: I love the concept, I'm disappointed in the execution.

The concept, for those just tuning in: After the War in Heaven and the banishing of those who followed Lucifer in revolt against God, the angel Remiel of the Seraphim Host decided to quit Heaven and dwell on Earth. Eventually, he decided to hide his divine nature in a human guise, and settled into the role of Remy Chandler, a Boston private detective. He fell in love with a mortal woman named Madeline, revealed his true nature to her, and they married. Unwilling to have children that would turn out "unnatural" due to the blend of human and angelic nature, they adopted a dog named Marlowe. Remy also revealed his true nature to a dying cop named Steven Mulvehill, who became one of his two closest friends, the other being a former guardian angel named Francis who had originally followed Lucifer but repented before the War was over and was given penance by God: stand guard over the door to Hell.

All of this back-story happens before the first book in the series, and is sprinkled liberally between the first two books in the series. The first two books were approached as somewhat from Remy's point of view -- not first person narrative, but everything definitely filtered (except for one scene in the first book) through the perspective of knowing only what Remy would know, when he would know it. The first two books were also heavy on the "series set-up" angle: the first book introducing Remy and pitting him literally against the end of the world; the second showing how that near-miss of an apocalypse has set the supernatural world of angels and demons into an agitated kind of motion.

Book three is the first in the series that seems to be more about a case than about the political machinations of Heaven and Hell (although, of course, there is a connection, and a set-up for something that will probably pay off in a big way later should the series last long enough). It's also the first to feature a main bad guy only peripherally associated with Judeo-Christian beliefs: the old god Dagon. There's also a subplot about Samson and Delilah and what they're doing now (no surprise they're immortal; in the one Remy Chandler short story, we found that Noah was still alive too). The Samson and Delilah plot, and the revival of Dagon, come together with the case Remy is currently working on: locating a missing six year old girl named Zoe (who is more than she seems) and the father who stole her away. Those three plots are enough to propel the book, and Sniegoski rightly leaves mentions of Heaven and Hell to a minimum. This is also the first book not told completely through Remy's perspective: chapters (and eventually, scenes within chapters) bounce between Remy, Delilah, Dagon, Zoe's father and mother, and several other supporting characters.

On the upside: 1) the three plots are interesting, and while the way they come together is not really shocking they at least fit together sensibly; 2) Sniegoski finds a somewhat trite but still workable way to keep the late Madeline as an active presence in Remy's life; 3) we get to see more of how the Biblical world is still extant in the modern world (the aforementioned blind Samson and near-demonic Delilah, still both paying some form of penance for the mistakes they made in Biblical times); 4) with this particular plot there is almost no way Sniegoski could have kept things only in Remy's POV, and the change in style makes the third book feel a little fresher (sort of like Jim Butcher writing the novella "Back-up" from Thomas Wraith's POV instead of Harry Dresden's); 5) the scenes between Remy and Marlowe are possibly the best-written scenes in the book.

On the downside: 1) Sniegoski's style is still choppy to the extreme, highly repetitive (not just from scene to scene, but characters repeating each other in the same scene). While he keeps the references to previous books appropriately brief, he has a tendency to repeat information from this story in places that felt out of place, or made it feel like he needed one more good edit; 2) what should be an excellent supporting cast is once again largely relegated to the background -- Madeline is dead, and still gets more screen-time than any of the living recurring characters. The bits where Remy and Mulvehill drink together are fun, but Mulvehill needs more to do than that if we're going to maintain interest in him; 3) with all the repetition of information, there's still a decided lack of sensory detail and what is there feels largely cliched except for a few nice turns of phrase -- Sniegoski's strong point is in the dialogue more than the description; 4) the scenes between Remy and his dog are possibly the best-written scenes in the book.

I really, really want to like this series. The concept is a strong one; the characters have great potential. But so far the potential is not realized, and the lack of immediacy even in the fight scenes made the book disappointing for me.

Great installment to the Remy Chandler Series

March 2, 2010: I can't say that I have been the biggest fan of the urban fantasy genre but I have been totally hooked on Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden Files for a few years. Last summer I picked up the Mean Streets compilation to see what Harry was up to and discovered Sniegoski's Remy Chandler character in his novella "Noah's Orphans". It was a terrific story and an even more interesting concept: An angel living amongst humans working as a private investigator. I immediately picked up the first two novels at my local bookstore and read them both in a single sitting. The books offer an interesting take on the concepts of angels, gods, heaven and hell weaved into two very good mysteries. What I really love, and what I found very moving at times, are the depictions of Remy's relationships with his human wife, his human friend Steve, his friend Francis (a former guardian angel who once was on the wrong side during the war in heaven and now guards one of the gates of hell as a penance) and especially with his dog and best friend, Marlowe. Angels have the ability to talk to animals and we get to eavesdrop on these hilarious and believable conversations.
Sniegoski has not missed a beat with his newest installment in the series, "Where Angels Fear to Tread". Remy has been hired by the mother of young autistic girl to search for her kidnapped daughter who seems to have some clairvoyant abilities and may be the key to something big and powerful. He gets a little help from the Old Testament hero Samson, who is still alive, because the little girl is also being sought by Samson's former lover and betrayer Delilah for reasons unknown. Samson is still a little bitter over the breakup. It's a very enjoyable take on the biblical characters and it's obvious the author had a lot of fun making them contemporary and letting us know what they have been up to for the last four thousand or so years. I definitely recommend this book to anyone and I look forward to the next book!

A delightful morose mystery with paranormal beings

A frantic mother comes to Remy because her husband took their 6 year old autistic daughter. Delilah has great power, but is seeking more. Samson is looking for Delilah (yes, them), to kill the betraying witch. A Sumerian god is wants to be a god again. Zoe, the six year old, who rocks and hand flaps, also draws the future, and is who they all seek. And Remy, either as a P.I. or angel, must stop most of them. I really like these urban fantasies/ mysteries because Remy and Marlowe (his dog) and the rest of his pals and allies are so delightful to spend time with.

About the Author
Edna Holmes grew up, a country girl, the third one of ten children. The rich and varied experiences of her childhood are often referenced in her writing. She married her "soldier home from the war" at an early age and five years later they both became Christians through a personal faith in Jesus Christ. Their focus changed immediately. Years later her husband became the pastor of a church in Grapevine, TX. He would serve faithfully in that pastorate for forty-two years. Within those decades the church grew to be strong in their missions outreach: contributing to the support of many missionary families serving all over the world. Edna was privileged to travel with her husband to many countries as he visited the missionaries, encouraging them in their work. She learned from experience that Christian women all over the world, in all cultures, have the same basic needs and desires of the heart. Edna's priority in the ministry was to teach women, at every opportunity, the Word of God and encourage them to make it the guide of their lives. Treasures to Keep was born when the church women encouraged her to write a daily devotional book for them. She produced it in monthly segments, which later were combined and printed into a complete one-year devotional book. In that form, it began to be circulated outside the church to other women. Many lives have been affected by its plain, easy to understand, teaching. Edna would later say, "It was the hardest work I ever did in my life, but also the most rewarding."

This daily devotional is encouraging as well as convicting. You will be encouraged to a closer walk with the Lord and be inspired to get in His Word and dig deeper yourself. Mrs. Holmes writes in a colorful way that will engage you, yet this is an easy read that can be done in just a few minutes to start your day off right. I highly recommend this book not only for personal devotions, but also as s group devotion. Love this book!

Very good!

I went ahead & gave this short, (& I do mean short), book 5 stars because the poems are great. They are about 3 to 5 pages long. Not the average 4~liners. I laughed a little expecially about the runaway socks, so I know my Goddaughter will fall out laughing. I used similar kid books, simple games, jokes, & etc. to entertain the whole family while the power was out one day, & it turned out to be so much fun, & a time of bonding. I will search for other books like this one to have on hand. I would pay up to about $1.50 for this one as is, but I'd pay $6.00 if it were longer. It is that good!

Children Will Love These!

I am not a poem person since I don't understand most of them but I loved the title and cover and it was free! These were really cute and I could picture what the different characters were doing while reading these poems. A couple reminded me of Dr. Seuss. Very cute and I think kids and adults will get a kick out of them.

I got this for the 4th grade poetry project for my daughter. She is a reluctant reader, but these poems were so funny and engaging for her, that she read her assigned number of poems without complaint. She even memorized one to share with the class.

Yes... BUT!

Yes... BUT! I have the original Alla Prima, as well as his book on figure painting, and the new book. But here is the rub:

I too was a student at The American academy of art, many years after Richard Schmidt graduated, and I studied figure and anatomy with Sala, Bill Mosby, and others 5 days a week, 3 hrs a day and twice that in summer studying the Academies great nude models for 2.5 years after similar study in Under graduate and before graduate school. I also became a professional figure painter and Professional figure and portrait artist.

Thanks to books like Richard Schmidt's, early book on figure painting and the original Alla Prima, I was able enjoy his art and l benefited by buying many books of the old Masters. I always enjoyed Richard Schmidt's work. However, I must say that he must remember how we all struggled to afford supplies, as we sought the books of the masters, of which I now have hundreds of copies, and in those days I often found great bargains. That being said, however, in today's world student debt is out of sight, and the current cost of the new Alla Prima book places it well out of the reach of 98% of students.

I suggest that the publisher and Richard think about creating a less expensive version for students. Right now, the price of Alla Prima 2, is high as it is, but what is worse is that the carpetbaggers are driving the prices even higher, and far out of the range of those studying art, and even high enough that many colleges are not as eager to buy such books for their own collections.

I know, someone will say "Let them eat Cake..." meaning go to a library. Well right now students are say the waiting lists are backed up for months, and I verified that.

be very cautious!

Mr. Schmid is a graceful and confident painter who has created an army of followers seduced by the apparent ease with which he executes his work. Anyone who has watched his videos or seen his exhibitions (in particular the Butler show), can be easily fooled into thinking that what he accomplishes with such alacrity is easily attainable. It is not! And the often unspoken part of his craft is his astonishingly deft draughtsmanship. Each mark, so carefully considered and assessed, is a consequence of a lifetime of observational drawing. And it is the quality most often ignored by artists delving into this book (and his others) looking for technical solutions.
This is dangerous stuff for the developing artist who can become enraptured with methods that result in glib formula in the hands of less gifted practitioners.

All my books from Josh McDowell have been outstanding and very detailed. This is no exception, if you want to really get into the other religions, then this is your book!!

Informative, Understandable, Fair-minded, and Respectful.

Josh McDowell is a former atheist who set out to prove that the Bible was false. He sought manuscript, archaeological, and historical evidence that would show that it was full of errors and could not be trusted. To his surprise, the evidence that he found convinced him of the opposite: that manuscripts, archaeology, and history supported the accuracy of the Bible. He made a confession of faith, was baptized, became a Christian, attended seminary, and became a Christian minister.

This book is written from the perspective of a Christian, comparing the beliefs of Christianity to other world religions and cults. Most books on comparative religion in the U.S. are written by atheist university professors who believe that all religions are simply old myths from different cultures. Those who are used to this approach may have a problem with McDowell's Christian perspective.

However, McDowell is very fair. Although he is a unapologetically Protestant, he treats Roman Catholicism and Orthodox Christianity as coequal Christian faiths. He does not engage in a denominational struggles, but focuses on what all three have in common as historic core Christain beliefs.

He treats other religions and cults with the same respect, pointing out how they differ from Christianity in their beliefs without making subjective or judgmental statements about them. At the end of the book he even tells the reader what he admires about many non Christian religions, such as Mormons' committment to evangelism and Muslims' committment to prayer and fasting; he encourages Christians to emulate such committment in the practice of their own faith.

Josh McDowell is a scholar and a gentleman; he treats others are he wishes to be treated. He disagrees with other religions and cults, but he shows great respect toward those who practice them. He seeks intellectual and theological dialogue with everyone about the greater issues of life without disparaging their beliefs.

Christians of all denominations will find this book to be very informative, easily understood, fair to their particular denomination, and respectful toward non Christians. Non Christians can benefit from the clear presentation of Christian beliefs from a practicing Christian and also from McDowell's clear summaries of the basic beliefs of other religions. Some non Christians may be offended by McDowell's Christian perspective, but should consider that religious people feel the same way when atheist university professors teach about their particular religions as a "cultural myths."

This book presents an opportunity to learn how a Christian thinks and sees the world, providing balance the more common atheistic perspective in the study of comparative religions. The old proverb that one should "walk a mile in another man's mocassins before judging him" applies well to this book. Read the book with an open mind and let McDowell explain Christian beliefs and how they differ from the beliefs of other religions or cults. Josh McDowell may disagree with them, but he is never "disagreeable."
