I've had to do tons of research in order to be able to travel the way I do today, and all the while I wished there was some kind of "travel for free for dummies" or "working and traveling the world for idiots" guide. Since I've finally accumulated enough information to live the free travel dream for myself, I decided to write that how-to-travel-for-free book. Now, people will be able to learn in a day what took me years to figure out.

About the Author
Jacqueline Boss is a traveling entrepreneur and writer. She owns and operates Escape Normal and encourages people to create their own jobs and live out their travel dreams. Jacqueline has traveled to many countries and plans to continue her journey around the world for a few years, before settling down, enjoying life slowly, and opening an exotically decorated tea shop.

Excellent & enjoyable long-term travel guide

This is an excellent little guide to the world of free travel. The value of this book lies in the fact that it is written as a how-to guide rather than as a series of "look what I did" diary entries. This is the book to read if you actually want to travel for free yourself rather than just read about how somebody else did it. Although there are a few personal stories in here too, which in this case, since they are backed by solid how-to information, acts as good motivation and evidence that the how-to advice actually works.

The book is broken down by section based on the type of travel you want to do- voluntourism, study abroad, seasonal work- or if you're looking to do something like find travel grants, apply for scholarships, or fund your own travels with a mobile income or online business of your own.

Recommended read. I enjoyed it very much.

Helped me find a volunteer position in Hawaii

I really didn't know where to start. I've been wanting to travel so badly for years but the decisions and research always seemed really overwhelming. I'd seen this book before and I finally decided to buy it when I hit a road block in my travel planning. The author has done so much herself and it helped me to de-mystify the whole process. I ended up finding a really nice volunteer position at a retreat center in Hawaii where I plan on staying for a month. I'm not sure what I will do after but I am very excited about the possibilities.

Inspiring, Helpful Book!

This book is awesome! I've done some travelling on my own the past couple of years and I really wish I would have had this book back then! It would have saved me a LOT of time researching. Even though I've researched some about free/cheap travel, I learned about a lot more programs I'd like to try. This book will definitely give you inspiration! Right after I read it, I wanted to sign up for a program and jump on a plane, off on another adventure! I really like that the author, Jaqueline Boss, has experience going through some of these programs herself. She's a well-informed writer and includes some helpful tips throughout the book. Knowing that she's actually done some of the programs she writes about makes it seem like more of a possibility that you really can do it too!

Against Her Will

A good story. A kidnapped, and bound married couple are held at the mercy of sexual predator. The predator ignores her pleas to let them go and begins to engage the beautiful wife in having sex with this fiend. Slowly the kidnaper breaks her down by arousing her. Her non consent begins to wain and her husband does not want to admit that she is beginning to enjoy the length and girth of this sexual pleasure. The wife has never known such pleasure.
A good read ...get it.

So hot it melted my monitor!

“Against Her Will” by Matthew Lee

This story wasn’t just hot -- it seared, it scorched, it sizzled. As disturbing to read as it was arousing (perhaps disturbing specifically because it was so arousing). Thank goodness I never fell under the tutelage of a Jacob in real life; don’t think I’d want to learn whatever dark lessons he might teach me about myself. Some knowledge we keep locked far from consciousness for a reason. Adam and Eve would have been banished from Eden once they tasted that apple if for no other reason than because their innocence would be utterly shattered after delving too deep within their own psyches. That long-lost Paradise can only be inhabited by the innocent, not those who’ve been forced to confront real self-knowledge. But “Against Her Will” (and his will too, if we include her husband) was a work of fiction, which makes it a safer way for us to explore the deeper reaches of ourselves. And what a powerful, compelling, erotic story it was to read. Wow! Cold showers for me for the rest of the week.

My only caveat is that, as with most work published on the internet, this would have benefited from closer scrutiny before it was released. The errors in copy editing and proofreading were relatively minor, but they still sometimes jolted me out of the story as I tried to make sense of the occasional incorrect pronoun, missing word or similar mistake. But as I said, these errors were relatively minor and never enough to keep “Against Her Will” from being a 5-star story. I highly recommend it and will definitely read more of Matthew Lee’s work.

A departure from normal

I liked the non-consensual aspect of this story. A departure from this author's normal style. I hope he does more though. He certainly has a wY with words and makes you almost feel what is going on. The descriptions of characters, feelings, emotions leave the reader wanting more. With every story I read by this author, I almost hate the fact that it ends.

This Book Makes Your Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Light Up With Dopaminergic Depolarization Like Times Square on New Years Eve

If the title of this review seems somehow cleverly conversational yet awkwardly technical, then I have indeed captured the paradox of Linden's latest book, "The Compass of Pleasure." It's a great piece of science writing, infused with wit, humor, and insight, yet the author demands a lot of the general reader. Linden refuses to "dumb down" the incredibly complex workings of the brain, and with scholarly discipline he avoids tabloid overgeneralizing from current research findings. Therefore, in addition to the many colorful stories and insightful theories explaining pleasure-seeking and addictive behaviors, Linden has included descriptions of many complex neuroscience experiments on brains both rat and human, as well as detailed descriptions of biological processes right down to the cellular and even sub-cellular level. At times it was slow going even for me as a physician, and parts of the book will certainly be over the heads of non-science types. Nonetheless, I feel that Linden has handled the topic masterfully, and - mark my words - if anyone can ever make the terms "Medial Forebrain Bundle", "Ventral Tegmental Area", or "Parahippocampal Gyrus" into household names, then it will certainly be David J. Linden!

Pleasure (and its close relatives including reward, satisfaction, and addiction) and pain govern a lot of human behavior. Amazingly, due to brain science research we now know nearly all of the parts of the brain involved in the "pleasure and reward" circuitry. This knowledge represents a tremendous advance in human knowledge and eventually will hold the key to helping humankind greatly with our struggles that represent the chapters of the book - drug use, eating behavior, sexual behavior (and misbehavior), gambling, and other pleasure-oriented behaviors. However, as one realizes from reading this fascinating book, we are still near the beginning of our arc of understanding of our own complex brains. For pleasure does not exist in isolation in the human brain; rather pleasure interacts intimately with other brain processes. Pleasure circuits interact with memory circuits (how else will our brains keep a mental record of our pleasurable pastimes?). Pleasure circuitry interacts with learning circuitry (how else will we learn how to reproduce pleasurable activities?). Pleasure circuitry interacts with circuitry for experiencing other emotions, and with sensory input and motor output circuitry, and with more abstract centers in the cortex that govern functions such as "salience", foresight, judgment, and planning.

All of this makes for a fascinating read on the pleasure centers of the human brain that answers many interesting questions about everything from sex addiction to slot machines, from obesity to exercise addiction, but also - like any good scientific writing - raises more questions than it answers, including that eternal conundrum (as I watch my bright and talented 9 year-old ignoring her favorite breakfast while clicking away furiously on her electronic gaming device): how much do we really, truly differ from that proverbial lab rat mashing away at the lever delivering squirts of cocaine directly into his "medial forebrain bundle"?

Facinating new explanations for the oldest of human behaviors!

With just enough scientific theory to add credibility,and a nice helping of wit, this book offers an easy and informative peek into emerging neuroscience. Particularly for those of us who have had careers or life experiences that may have over exposed us to humankind's baser behaviors, this discussion comes as a confirmation of what we already suspected: the evolving man's brain has a long way to go before we are fully seperated from the other primates that share our planet!

Although the author is careful to avoid the sweeping generalizations and unsubstantiated theories that are frequently part of mass market scientific literature, he makes a strong case for fully considering the nature side of addictive, even self destructive, human behaviors. In his concluding "the future of pleasure", he even allows a bit of hope for how some of these behaviors(and the misery they can bring)might some day be altered by science. All in all, an important book that is as enlightening as it is entertaining.

very technical book, scient heavily

Not exactly light reading, author uses lab rats as examples to describe clinical concepts related to brain & nervous systems innerworkings, so technical terminology is standard lingo throughout the book. Which makes this book very educational, but also challenging to follow. I've mentioned this because of the briefs printed on the back cover, "a hugely entertaining look at why we enjoy . . .". Might be entertaining for readers with masters or PHD. on the subject.

About the Author
EUGENE H. PETERSON is a writer poet and retired pastor. He has authored more than thirty-four books (not including The Message). He is Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver British Columbia. Eugene also founded Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air Maryland where he ministered for twenty-nine years. He lives with his wife Jan in Montana.

Thank you Pastor Peterson

I picked up this book because I saw Eugene Peterson speak at the Catalyst Conference; and being at the very beginning of my own pastoral career, I knew I could do well with having some outside voices speak into my situation.

And you could argue that Eugene is Presbyterian and I am not, that he grew up in a different culture and generation than I did and that the world of ministry looks very different today: all true. But, I don't know if that means that the role that the pastor plays is any different - and I think Eugene would agree.

The Pastor is not so much a book as it is a story, what I mean is... it's a journey of how Eugene planted a church, grew a congregation, built a sanctuary and traveled through the "badlands" of ministry.

And as a memoir goes, it had all of the things I was hoping for, funny stories about growing up and being a pastor, how he met his wife, the journey of starting and growing a church, some of his weekly practices, good books he recommends, and some really great biblical application.

But to read this book is really to read Eugene's story, so it wouldn't be right for me to tell it here, but there are a few of the things that resonated with my own story:

First, Eugene talks about the role of pastor being a vocation and not a "job." I've said it a million times, the job of being a pastor is one of the weirdest careers of all time. From the outside it doesn't look like any other nine to five on the planet. But Eugene would rather you think of it as a vocation. With a job, you can walk away from it, you can separate your work life from your home life, and certainly Eugene talks about having a Sabbath rest and "getting away" now and then - but a vocation is a calling - it's a lifestyle of living with a community of people. How does one do that?

Second, Eugene talks about being a "contemplative pastor" and not a "competitive pastor."

What's the difference?

A competitive pastor is always looking to the next project, and is constantly "measuring up" their church activity and the spiritual growth of its members. A competitive pastor has an agenda; has goals and is pushing their way towards those goals. But in the end, these are still people's lives... and while we (as pastors) might feel called to "change people" and perhaps feel like a failure if people don't rise to the occasion, tithe more, become prayer warriors, volunteer, help, join in, memorize, or in any other way mature into the mile marker we have set for them... we have to be able to live comfortably within the space God calls us to.

A contemplative pastor is a pastor who is able to be with people "without having an agenda for them, a pastor who is able to accept people just as they (are) and guide them gently and patiently into a mature life with Christ but not (getting) in the way, (by letting) the Holy Spirit do the guiding." page 211

And the life of being a pastor is finding the balance of merging these two things together - you and the congregation. Eugene talks about how this merging sometimes breaks. "I had been shifting from being a pastor dealing with God in people's lives to treating them as persons dealing with problems in their lives. I was not being their pastor. I could have helped and still been their pastor. But by reducing them to problems to be fixed, I omitted the biggest thing of all in their lives, God and their souls, and the biggest thing in my life, my vocation as pastor... I was trading in the complexities of spiritual growth in congregation for the reduced dimensions of addressing a problem that could be named and understood." page 140

Everyone has their own idea of what a pastor should be, but rather than listen to the congregation define the "job," Eugene embarks on listening to scripture define the "calling." How does worship and work come together? How is a pastor fulfilling his biblical calling on a typical Tuesday?

This is a wonderful book and a helpful resource for the new, the tired, the experienced and the retired. I highly recommend it.

a worthy read

At times, The Pastor has valuable insights. Each chapter, for the most part, is a self-contained story; some helpfully unpack who is Eugene Peterson, others the pastorate or at least pastoral life for Peterson, and some were just enjoyable reading. The book, because it is a memoir, strongly presents a picture of Peterson's pastoral shape and formation--his journey, his temperament, his flavor, and his gifts: Among other dynamics, Peterson is in his element when in one-on-one relationships, nature, solitude, and with pen in hand or a thought in mind; he's contemplative, theological, an academician, a writer-pastor, an `unbusy pastor', poet-craftsman, Montana nature lover, compassionate, collegial, brilliant yet not stuffy, having left a big footprint in God's kingdom yet not taking himself too seriously. No one can fill Eugene's shoes, and only some pastors have a similar temperament and gift mix.

Some of his perceptions are biblically astute and justifiably critical of the American Church that is too often obsessed with programs, numbers, activity, usefulness, consumer religion, and the next big thing. The book's largest section, Shekinah, could have been called `badlands', a term Peterson uses repeatedly to describe a stretch of nomadic land on the way to Montana as well as his desert, formative pastoral years. Here, the Great Shepherd, uses circumstance's in Peterson's life to bring him into his own land--shepherd-writer-theologian.

An Overview

Following its Introduction: Pastor Pete, the book is divided into four parts, with each sort of building on the other. The book is also held together by well-placed stories, with each story serving as a pivot.

Part I. Topo and Kairos. In New York, Peterson meets Pastor John of Patmos who will play a critical role in Peterson's life as a pastor and later as a writer. Part II. "Intently Haphazard." Meet the people, the circumstances, that will both sow and water the seeds the will eventually give birth a pastor. And it was during his seminary days, Peterson met Barth, through his Epistle to the Romans. "I've been reading him ever since." Part III. Shekinah. Along with his wife, Peterson plants a new church in Baltimore. This is where a young pastor will be shaped. The reader will be appropriately encouraged by the few years spent in the "Catacombs Presbyterian Church." This is also where a young pastor will have to clarify his vocational call as a pastor. But following the construction of their promising worshiping facility and sanctuary, disappointment and discouragement would set in the life of this pastor. But Nietzche's phrase A Long Obedience in the Same Direction would steady the ship, so to speak. Part IV. Good Deaths. A now season pastor begins to make the transition, through "Wind Words," as were. What were a pastor's translations of parts of the New Testament and the Psalms in the American vernacular, for his flock, give birth to what we now know as The Message. Ironically, after making the decision not be a professor earlier in life, choosing rather to be a pastor, Peterson, after a few stops, would be installed in the James Houston Chair of Spiritual Theology at Regent College, in Vancouver, Canada.

Concluding Thoughts

In the nearly thirty years at the church he founded in Baltimore, Maryland, Peterson had a faithful, supportive pastor's wife, who went along for the journey from the get go. This was crucial for Peterson.

Though I have issues here and there, especially with Peterson's liturgical approach to his church building project and so on, what I've taken away from reading The Pastor: A Memoir is far more rewarding by contrast. In fact, Peterson has even helped me to clarify my own call as a pastor.

Lots of merits but not 100% satisfied anymore

I'm a faculty member who has used this textbook for several years. It provides a relatively balanced perspective on community and urban sociology issues although it leans slightly more towards ecological explanations for urban change over the role of power/ inequality. I find the content is written in a clear, presentable manner and does a decent job of covering the fundamental issues as a textbook should; I also like the way they structure the review questions at the end. I supplement it with the Annual Editions handbook which provides a look at more real-life, contemporary issues. Although I like the updated material in this edition, I feel as if the content is focusing less and less on the important role of the power elite in shaping urbanization processes. That along with its hefty price may make me consider other options in the far future.

Probably the one section I find the most lacking is the section on Asian Americans, which pretty much homogenizes their experience as the "model minority" with barely any mention of Vietnamese/ Cambodians/ Laotians/ etc. on the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum. The discussion on their racialization as foreigners (mia tuan, nadia kim), the negative implications of the model minority myth (too many to name), the formation of diverse Asian communities (john logan), inequality within ethnic enclaves (peter kwong), the significance of ethnic networks/ communities on social mobility (min zhou), and the role of entrepreneurs and transnational capital in reviving metropolitan areas (jan lin, ivan light) are significantly underdeveloped. Then he uses the atypical case of Japanese Americans to prove his case. I realize he cannot cover everything mentioned above but this section is outdated, inaccurate, and too general to be considered "textbook-worthy." I beg the author Palen to do a more thorough and updated coverage of Asian Americans, at least somewhat comparable to what he did for the Latino and African American sections.
