Realizing that it is the water in his garden that attracts the small creatures, Alejandro decides to dig a water hole to accommodate the larger desert animals, like the coyotes, javelinas and bobcats. Puzzled when they seem to ignore the water, Alejandro finally realizes that the hole is too close to his house and the road. So the kind man digs another, more sheltered, water hole, and his offering to the animals and their inadvertent gift of company are mutually appreciated. Detailed pictures and descriptions of Alejandro's animal neighbors are provided on the final spread, allowing readers to become better acquainted with the creatures that Long works into her polished paintings, which impressively recreate the muted colors and varied textures of the desert. Grade 1-4-Alejandro, a man in his 60s, lives in a small adobe house beside an isolated desert road. His only companion is a burro. To ease his loneliness, he tends to his garden. One day, a ground squirrel approaches the garden to drink from its furrows, followed by wood rats, pocket gophers, jackrabbits, kangaroo rats, pocket mice, roadrunners, gila woodpeckers, and thrashers. Time passes more quickly, and Alejandro enjoys his new companions. However, he soon realizes that they come to him for water, not for company, and sets out to dig a water hole for them. Albert's simple and poetic text evokes the silence and emptiness in Alejandro's life. He grows to understand his interdependence with the land and its creatures as he lives among them. Long's rich, detailed, and realistically rendered pictures provide the perfect visual setting to an already memorable tale. The colorfully illustrated glossary of flora and fauna is informative. An ideal book to develop in readers an appreciation for the beauty of the desert and its inhabitants.

The handsome watercolors by Long (Fire Race, Ten Little Rabbits) are well served by the oversize format. Realistically detailed and brightly colored, the pictures shatter the myth of the desert as a barren, inhospitable habitat. Satisfying authentic story and illustrations about the southwest desert

I am so thrilled with this new book for my granddaughters, 5 and 3 years. This is a beautiful story about a simple, lonely man who lives in the desert but who finds companionship with all the desert denizens when he finds out the secret to luring them in to his property. What a charming and heartwarming story with exceptionally beautiful illustrations. For anyone who loves the desert and wants to expose their children to the birds and animals, as well as the lifestyle of those who choose to live there, this is a touching and worthy gem. Being desert dwellers ourselves, there is a satisfying authenticity to the story and illustrations. Five stars.

Good bed time story

Alejandro is lonley living in the desert. By accident, he learns that if he plants a garden, animals come for the water and shade and Alejandro's lonliness is lessened.
But later, Alejandro learns that gifts given (the garden) makes the gifts received (the company) all the more sweeter.
"Alejandro's Gift" is a quiet book - no need for funny voices or wild antics. It makes a great bed time story or a great "snuggle with your kids on a rainy day" book.
This can also provide a nice way to discuss nature and preservation with your children.
There are lots of interesting things to look at in the illustrations. I read this to a group of school agers and they all enjoyed looking at the pictures and trying to identify all the different animals. We live far away from any desert, so many of these animals were unfamiliar to us.
This is a good book and I definitly recommend it.

this is a book EVERYONE needs to read!

this is a book i know will stay with me forever (or at least for a long long time). if you don’t already know, this is a “gay” book. even if you feel uncomfortable or somewhat opposed to people of LGBTQ, i still believe you should read simon vs.

i’ve read other novels that are LGBTQ, but i’ve never read one that was as wholeheartedly and honest as simon vs. everything was so relatable. in other novels, it was clear and obvious the characters that were LGBTQ were sorta different: in the way they act, speak, dress, etc. etc. however in simon vs., that was most certainly not the case. after reading this novel, i’ve realized that people who are LGBTQ are just like everyone else. there really isn’t a difference between gays and straights, except the preference in gender; in the end, that’s all there is.

reading things from simon’s perspective, we could also see how the LGBTQ community is generally treated. it was beautiful to see people who were incredibly supportive, but also people who were just downright awful. i loved every bit of that. it was completely genuine and true. we saw everything: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

my favorite aspect of the novel was how casual simon and his friends spoke of being gay. they would often joke about it – but not in anyway i found insulting or condescending. people often make this a huge deal, which i suppose it is a big deal, but sometime it shouldn’t have to be a big deal. if you think about it, being gay/straight/etc is only a big deal because people make it a big deal. why should it really matter? it’s just a small part of who we/you are. i find it similar to a person’s race. for example, it’s not like you’re going to see someone and instantly judge them because of their race (if you do, then go away). the same should be said about a persons’ sexual orientation.

simon was an extremely sarcastic and funny character, so i couldn’t help but smile and grin the entire time. no, seriously, i couldn’t read this book in public because i would (literally) laugh out loud and smile to myself. people were definitely giving me strange looks, but i have no regrets because i looooooove it so much! (eventually i resorted to happily reading in my room.)

the main reason why i enjoyed this book so much was because IT WAS SO CUTE. the interactions between simon and blue made me want to squeal; i couldn’t help but root for them until the very end. the relationships between everyone were truly genuine and lovely and just.. *content sigh*. his family and friends were great and everything was

About the Author
W. Steve Albrecht is the Andersen Alumni Professor of Accountancy in the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University. He received a bachelor's degree in accounting from BYU and MBA and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, and Certified Fraud Examiner.

Dr. Chad O. Albrecht, assistant professor at Utah State University, received his PhD from ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, and currently teaches forensic accounting and ethics. His research focuses on international fraud and corruption from a humanistic perspective. His research articles have appeared in numerous journals and have been quoted in multiple news outlets. Previous to his doctoral studies, Dr. Albrecht worked as a licensed stockbroker for the Bank of Montreal. He currently serves as associate editor of Cross Cultural Management: An International Journal, a peer-review journal by Emerald Publishing.

Dr. Conan C. Albrecht, associate professor of Information Systems at Brigham Young University, teaches enterprise development, middleware, and business programming. Dr. Albrecht researches computer-based fraud detection techniques, e-commerce platforms, and online group dynamics. He has published several articles on fraud detection and information theory in numerous academic and professional outlets. He is currently developing an open source framework for computer-based fraud detection. The core of this research is detectlets, which encode background and detection information for specific fraud schemes. He hopes the system will eventually serve as the foundation of a large, online repository of detectlets about all types of fraud in the next few years.

Dr. Mark F. Zimbelman is an accounting professor and Selvoy J. Boyer Fellow at Brigham Young University (BYU). Dr. Zimbelman received his CPA license and worked for more than six years as a financial statement auditor and, later, as a controller in industry. After obtaining his PhD he worked with KPMG in their fraud and forensics practice. This opportunity provided hands-on experience investigating violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, financial statement fraud, vendor fraud, and embezzlement.

I needed this book for a Forensic Accounting class that I'm taking. The book (and the class) are pretty straightforward. Not as interesting as I had hoped but clearly written and still more interesting than financial accounting!

About the Author

Dr. Sumeet Dua is currently an upchurch endowed associate professor and the coordinator of IT research at Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, USA. He received his PhD in computer science from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

His areas of expertise include data mining, image processing and computational decision support, pattern recognition, data warehousing, biomedical informatics, and heterogeneous distributed data integration. The National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the Air Force Office of Sponsored Research (AFOSR), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Louisiana Board of Regents (LA-BoR) have funded his research with over $2.8 million. He frequently serves as a study section member (expert panelist) for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and panelist for the National Science Foundation (NSF)/CISE Directorate. Dr. Dua has chaired several conference sessions in the area of data mining and is the program chair for the Fifth International Conference on Information Systems, Technology, and Management (ICISTM-2011). He has given more than 26 invited talks on data mining and its applications at international academic and industry arenas, has advised more than 25 graduate theses, and currently advises several graduate students in the discipline. Dr. Dua is a coinventor of two issued U.S. patents, has (co-)authored more than 50 publications and book chapters, and has authored or edited four books. Dr. Dua has received the Engineering and Science Foundation Award for Faculty Excellence (2006) and the Faculty Research Recognition Award (2007), has been recognized as a distinguished researcher (2004–2010) by the Louisiana Biomedical Research Network (NIH-sponsored), and has won the Outstanding Poster Award at the NIH/NCI caBIG―NCRI Informatics Joint Conference; Biomedical Informatics without Borders: From Collaboration to Implementation. Dr. Dua is a senior member of the IEEE Computer Society, a senior member of the ACM, and a member of SPIE and the American Association for Advancement of Science.

Dr. Xian Du is a research associate and postdoctoral fellow at�Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, USA. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in the CREATIS Lab, Lyon, France, from 2007 to 2008 and served as a software engineer in Kikuze Solutions Pte. Ltd., Singapore, in 2006. He received his PhD from the Singapore–MIT Alliance (SMA) Programme at the National University of Singapore in 2006.

Dr. Xian Du’s current research focus is on high-performance computing using machine-learning and data-mining technologies, data-mining applications for cybersecurity, software in multiple computer operational environments, and clustering theoretical research. He has broad experience in machine-learning applications in industry and academic research at high-level research institutes. During his work in the CREATIS Lab in France, he developed a 3D smooth active contour technology for knee cartilage MRI image segmentation. He led a small research and development group to develop color control plug-ins for an RGB color printer to connect to the Windows�system through image processing GDI functions for Kikuze Solutions.

He helped to build an intelligent e-diagnostics system for reducing mean time to repair wire-bonding machines at National Semiconductor Ltd., Singapore (NSC). During his PhD dissertation research at the SMA, he developed an intelligent color print process control system for color printers. Dr. Du’s major research interests are machine-learning and data-mining applications, heterogeneous data integration and visualization, cybersecurity, and clustering theoretical research.

"Data Mining and Machine Learning in Cybersecurity by Sumeet Dua, Xian Du" is a pretty decent, well organized book and seems it's written from vast Experience and Research.

It introduces basic concepts of machine learning and data mining methods for cybersecurity, and provides a single reference for all specific machine learning solutions and cybersecurity problems. The authors deal with how to apply machine learning methods in cybersecurity, categorizing methods for detecting, scanning, profiling, intrusions, and anomalies. The text presents hurdles and solutions in machine learning along with the fundamentals of cybersecurity. It also describes cutting edge problems in cybersecurity in the machine learning niche and looks at Privacy-Preserving Data Mining methods(PPDM) as a proactive security solution.

Weekly tranquility in paper form :)

The inspirational messages in this calendar are wonderful - uplifting, and something to ponder upon. I received this calendar as a gift from a friend, and I am grateful :)

The calendar is perpetual - you choose which page to show each week, and if you like it you can keep it the following week! If you haven't used the day spaces, you can come back and use the page again in the future! In this regard you can get much more than a year's use from the calendar.

There are a lot of beautiful scenes portrayed within the calendar, and the layout if lovely. The images take up both sides of each page spread. There are faded boxes for each week day (starting Sunday) in which to write reminders and such, and one uplifting message per page.

All in all, a very positive and motivational calendar. One thing to note though - I did have to add my own holes in order to hang up the calendar! It was simply a matter of hole punching the edge..

Kirsten Matheus is a communications engineer who is currently responsible for establishing Ethernet-based communication in the industry. She also initiated and chaired the OPEN Alliance and helped establish the IEEE 802.3 reduced twisted pair gigabit Ethernet (RTPGE, 1000BASE-T1) working group.

Where REAL automotive innovation is happening.

If we are going to have autonomous vehicles and ubiquitous over the air updates of on-board system software we are going to have to wrap our brains around automotive Ethernet. Kirsten Matheus and her collaborators document the decades-long journey of Ethernet to the car. Moving data rapidly within the infrastructure of the car is a proposition that will save lives and fuel while enabling entirely new driving experiences. Understanding HOW this technology has arrived at the threshold of broad mass market implementation is a critical step for the entire industry. Reading the book we understand the process and the product of that implementation. It isn't often that such keystone developments are explained clearly and completely, but Ms. Matheus' decision to share her insights, experience and knowledge will do much to advance the cause of automotive connectivity and industry transformation.

A must have

Automotive Ethernet is next evolutionary phase for in-car data communications and this very first book perfectly addresses this topic. This book is well-written and very well organized. I highly recommend it to the readers who want to get a very good overview of the subject and some critical information in a precise manner. The references are thorough and relevant. I enjoyed reading it and I am using it.

Poorly Organized and Lacking Information

This is a 351 page full color hardback guide book. It is written for the Playstation controls. It comes with a code to view the guide online as well.

The guide is very poorly organized, there is a great deal of missing information, and the information present is not explained well. There are entire sections of collectibles missing. The complex battle mechanics are only lightly explained. The data tables have no explanation for what numbers mean in many places. Within an hour of playing the game, I acquired a collectible not shown in the guide. There is no table of contents or glossary, so finding things requires lots of flipping through sections. The maps seem well done and useful so far. I have not used the walkthrough section to adequately judge it.

I've had no problems with the strategy guide since I've been using it. The instructions, wording, and font are all easy to read in the proper lighting and they're careful about spoiling too much of the story before you get there on certain parts. The book is pretty big, about the same size as the Tales of Xillia 2 Collector's strategy guide and uses the same kind of material that makes it a durable hardcover.

It's still easy to rip the pages if you're not careful of course, but only because they're printed on a thin, high gloss paper for easy page flipping. It's a nice book just like the Tales of Xillia 2 one.

Very credible efforts - Niru's tennis career and this first memoir

Coming from India, I thought I'd be familiar with most things in this book and didn't expect to be too captivated by the author's memoir. I was wrong! Niru's straightforward and easy style won me over from the very beginning. I was also pleasantly surprised to find my son who is just 15 (but has played competitive tennis for the last 4 years) completely engrossed in it. The reason is simple ... the author has written freely and straight from the heart and it is a tale of grit and determination. Half-way through the book, it becomes clear how her career was extremely challenging in terms of financial resources, alien environments, constant need for help from specialists and coaches, and the physical/mental energy to deal with all of the above and still have more to spare to compete at the highest levels of professional tennis. The amazing thing is that Niru and her family just seemed to do it without a thought ... as if the destiny was clear ... and this journey had to be undertaken. In modern times, there is an over-emphasis on the "winners," the world No-1's and this book clearly shows that you don't have to be that to be a champion. Being a champion is really about a "no holds barred" approach to life whether or not the rest of the Universe conspires to put you at the top. This book shows what this spirit is all about and that's a great reason for reading it. I am hoping that a little bit of that spirit has rubbed off on me and my son :-)

A must read for Serious Tennis Lovers

This book will be an inspiration for all those tennis players who aspire to make it big in the international circuit. It will give you the patience and heart to grind it through when faced with adversity .Just knowing that Nirupama in the 90's what challenges she had to fight through to make it a successful career will give you the reader/player the necessary wherewithal and drive to succeed. Take this journey with Niru and walk in her steps and you will know what it takes to make the most of your career and do it with passion. Must read for one and all.

I really like the book even though I'm not from India and I'm not a tennis follower. I loved the book because it gives a glimpse of the country and the culture and is a really inspiring story, Nirupama is a great role model for girls of all countries and cultures. The style is easy to read and the story is very interesting!!

I love Strategy Guides but microtransactions are making them pointless.

Its a good strategy guide. Really. the only reason I gave it 3 stars, because you can simply buy maps for all the collectibles, and the game is not so difficult that you need it. I enjoyed some of the recap at the end, developer insight. Once or twice it helped me find a collectible. After buying the maps though it didn't really make sense to own the book as well. I think this is the smallest of the books as well.
