Albert Boime is Professor of Art History at the University of California–Los Angeles and recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including the Myers Center Award for the Study of Human Rights in North America in 1999. His numerous books include Art and the French Commune: Imagining Paris after War and Revolution as well as Art in an Age of Counterrevolution, 1815–1848, volume 3 in his series A Social History of Modern Art.

It is not necessarily enough for a company to “go digital” and suddenly reap the benefits of a digital culture, a broader transformative process may be necessary, and this digital world is itself still changing and transforming. A book like this, seeking to help a company ride the transformation wave, may be a powerful aid.

The pace of change and often its sheer scale and enormity should not be underestimated. It can truly feel that one has not got an existing digital transformation process implemented before having to look at the next one. This impacts throughout the organisation on many levels and for marketers who are having to utilise the latest digital methods to reach an incredibly diverse audience it is no mean feat.

In this book the authors look at the issues from a marketing-led perspective, pulling in real-world interviews from senior marketing executives at companies such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Deloitte to try and better understand how a digital culture has consumed their companies and how its benefits can be leveraged and its challenges dealt with. With a bit of luck and application the reader may be able to help develop a unique digital culture for their organisation and ensure that this ever-changing being keeps up with the-then latest developments.

As well as the obvious (!) explanation of why a company will need a digital culture and helping the reader plan their impending journey, considerable advice is given to help create a framework for future action for this journey as well as acting as a companion for evaluating future (changed) journeys at the same time.

It is a reasonably priced book and the authors have done a good job in not drinking copiously from the “technology fountain of hyperbole”. Creativity, enthusiasm and expectation is suitably tempered and this veneer of moderation is well-appreciated. The style of the book is a mix between the mainstream and academic textbook, yet it remains quite accessible for both reader-groups. Short chapters, easy-to-digest text and extensive references help this process. It felt, to this reader, that the case studies and actual comments were the key driver for this book. Whilst the background information may be essential for many, equally for the more-experienced it might not be so radical. Yet reading counter views from those involved can make a difference and make the book suitable for both audiences.

There was nothing to explicitly dislike about this book. For many it will be a Godsend. For others it is just a damn good, informative read.

An engaging, readable text that moves at the same speed as the digital world it describes

While I was reading this book, I was interrupting everyone I know to share ideas and quotes. If you are looking for an engaging, readable text that moves at the same speed as the digital world it describes, buy this book.

The book has four main parts: 1. Why you need a digital culture, 2. Plotting your digital journey, 3. The digital culture framework, and 4. Keeping up with change. If you’re new to the idea of digital, I suggest instead focusing on the authors’ discussions of culture. Know your organization’s existing culture and focus on cultural norms, i.e. unwritten expectations of conduct. Here is the transition to digital: what habits and behaviors have been changed by technology to the point where the rules are still unwritten? Now you are in digital culture territory.

We all have different relationships with technology. “Tech innate” was a new phrase for me; it refers to people (I’ll resist the urge to say ‘kids’) who have had mobile devices and the internet since birth. But don’t place too much emphasis on the devices themselves. As the authors point out, it is really the “utility” of the devices that is changing how we live and work. Technology has become personal and people have become far more interconnected.

In a fast-evolving world, the future belongs to those with “broad skillsets”. This is not because they are able to do the work of more people, but because they have knowledge beyond one function and have had to learn different disciplines. They will help the organization bridge from one iteration to another. Their desire to be effective, natural curiosity, and personal drive to learn will serve them well. These people can have more of an impact on organizational culture if they represent a significant percentage of headcount.

REQUIRED READING - Case study on p. 28: Digital Transformation in Action by Eva Appelbaum, Partner, Digital Talent @ Work (formerly Head of Digital Marketing Transformation, BBC). This case study provides clear services-oriented evidence that it is utility not devices that holds the majority of value in a digital culture. The consultants in this case study don’t ‘do for’ their clients, they instead incubate capability. The consultants are not necessary in the long run to generate the desired results, and therefore the client both earns and deserves the credit for the improvements that are made.

Finally, senior leadership can not have a monopoly on decision making. If organizations are to benefit from real time data and insight, context is needed. A full embrace of digital culture requires both trust and empowerment. Individuals have to be allowed to combine their understanding of circumstances and available data to make responsive decisions. With this distribution of decision making comes the need for higher risk tolerance and an acceptance of productive failure. As long as the learnings from failure are codified so they can be prevented in the future, the failure was worthwhile.

I opened this review with a recommendation to buy the book. I close it with two other suggestions. 1. Follow everyone in the book on Twitter – most of them have their account handles listed, which makes it very easy. 2. If you have the good fortune to meet one or both of the authors, take them to dinner and engage them in open-ended conversation. If they are half as good-natured as they come through in the book, you’ll have a fascinating evening.

Aoife Marie Sheridan has loved reading from a very young age, starting off with mills and boon's books, given to by her grandmother her love for romances grew, by the age of 14 she had read hundreds of them.�

Aoife had a passion for writing poetry or in her eyes her journal entries. It was something she did throughout her teens and into her twenties. Aoife won first place for two of her poems and had them published at a young age of just nineteen. Realising she needed to get a real job (What writing isn't) she studied accountancy and qualified working in that field for many years, until her passion for reading returned and she found Maria V Snyder. Poison study one of her favourite books has been read and re-read countless times.�

Aoife's first book Eden Forest (Part one of the Saskia Trilogy) came to be after a dream of a man and woman on a black horse jumping through a wall of fire and the idea of Saskia was born. Now with her first novel published and taking first place for Eden Forest with Writers Got Talent 2013, Aoife continues to write tales of fantasy and is currently working on her third book for the Saskia Trilogy amongst other new works. Loved it, a great fantasy read.

I loved the first book in this series, and was a bit upset at the time that I had to wait so long for the 2nd, as I was impatient to wait, as I really needed to know what happened next. I just love Tristen, and still do in this book.

This book didn’t disappoint at all, I really loved it. There was some action and suspense too. It was a very entertaining fantasy with a gripping and unpredictable plot.
I loved all the surprising twist and turns. It kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

The biggest shock is the ending, which makes me really wish I had the 3rd book now.

I highly recommend to fantasy lovers out there. It’s a great series.

5 out of 5 stars for me.

This is going to be a brief review. I’m really not a big fan of fantasy novels. I guess there’s just some few fantasy book that I really really liked and reading fantasy novels, for me, is either a miss or hit. I guess fantasy books somehow overwhelm me and makes me lost in the book in a negative way, which makes me lose interest in reading it.

Well, I’m happy to say that City of Secrets is definitely a hit. I really enjoyed reading it! The characters were amazing and well written. The concept was really new for me which is a good thing.

Another thing I liked is the chemistry between Sarajane and Tristan. I just knew from the start that they are going to have a great chemistry since the first book.

It’s action-packed and thrilling, with bits of romance and drama on the side. Overall, it’s a very great read!

Sheridan takes you away with her brilliant descriptive writing

Aoife brings us along on Sarajane's adventure. We start with Sarajane and friends going to meet her father. Tristan is training her for what struggles may lie ahead, but will it be enough?

This is not my normal read but after the first book I had to read the next and look forward to the continued journey (warning this one ends with a cliffhanger).

Come along on this adventure, twist and turns you don't see coming, battles, mystery and some serious training. Ms. Sheridan takes you away with her brilliant descriptive writing. I would highly recommend this book and series to any YA reader, as well as those who love a great adventure story. Become part of the adventure! Fall in love with her characters and hold your breath as they struggle to survive

Jennie Jamison has been teaching IB Psychology since 1986 at St. Petersburg High School in Florida. Jennie leads workshops for IB teachers and is an experienced examiner for the Internal Assessment and Paper 1. About the Author
Marjorie Raskin began doing psychiatric research while a resident at New York State Psychiatric Institute. After her own Panic Disorder came into full bloom, she started her studies of anxiety and panic at University of California Medical Center. She set up U.C.'s first Anxiety Clinic. Her most important finding was the connection of emotional abuse and neglect in childhood with Panic Disorder in the adult. She continued her anxiety work after moving back to New York, first at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, and later at Queens Hospital Center. She established Anxiety Clinic at both hospitals. She studied writing at The New School and Sarah Lawrence.

A superb read deserving such coveted accolades as "riveting," "a real page-turner" and "not-to-be-missed." Each chapter segues into the next so compellingly the book is impossible to put down. Dr. Raskin's dialogue rings true, the people in her life memorable, and her splendid candor a worthy standard for anyone writing a truthful memoir. The Anxiety Expert will find a wide audience, including those who can draw hope from her courage in finding a way through debilitating panic attacks, and those of us yearning for books more fulfilling than fiction.

"A Triumph of the Spirit"

In one sense, this book is about a childhood dream. In elementary school in Brooklyn, Margie Tucker begins to feel that she may have a calling. Her aunt has been stricken with polio and she thinks about becoming a doctor who will find a cure for her aunt's disease. At age twelve, she makes the solemn decision to go for it. She studies hard, makes top grades in high school, nails the SATs, gets admitted to Radcliffe College and the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia. By this time, another New Yorker, Jonas Salk, has discovered the polio vaccine. But, Margie is about to realize much of her childhood dream. She becomes a doctor, marries a doctor, and as Dr. Marjorie Raskin becomes a psychiatrist at leading hospitals in California and New York. This, in itself, is quite a story. It is a straight-from-the-heart memoir of an often shy Brooklyn kid who hit the books hard and made it through medical school. But, Dr. Raskin's book is much more than that. With all her professional accomplishments and insights as a psychiatrist, she was not able to escape her own early demons. This is a must-read for anyone who has suffered from panic attacks or anxiety--or anyone interested in human emotions. The Anxiety Expert is that rare book that combines a moving, true life story and solid advice from a talented psychiatrist. The reader will close this book knowing that there is a real path to healing for people plagued by anxiety. It reads like a fine novel. At the same time, the reader feels this caring doctor taking her hand and showing her the way to emotional healing.

About the Author
Christopher A. Darden has worked for 15 years as a deputy district attorney for Los Angeles County, using the same passion he showed at the trial of O.J. Simpson to prosecute racist cops, murderers, drug dealers, and gang members. With every defendant black or white, rich or poor he had one simple goal: justice.

The trial of the century was no different. Challenged by lead defense attorney Johnny Cochran from the moment he took the case, criticized in his own community as an Uncle Tom, Darden stood up and argued before the jury and the country that O.J. Simpson wasn't above the law. "No one is above the law; not the police, not the rich, no one," he said.

Twenty years later, still a fresh perspective; must-read on race relations

When the news came blaring through that O.J. Simpson was the suspect in his ex-wife's recent murder, and all the speculation that came with that was interrupting tv and radio programming, I decided not to pay any attention until all the evidence was in and it was a "settled" case. The next year astounded me. It was impossible to not be aware of the trial, and even though I still made no effort to follow the case, the people involved became household names and many of the facts of the case imprinted upon my mind. Once the verdict was announced I was shocked at the stark divide between the way black people and white people in this country reacted and, as time revealed, thought about things in general. I was busy with life and relieved that it was finally over and just hoped we'd heal, as a nation. I never looked into it as a "settled case."
Then the tv miniseries aired recently and I caught it. I was amazed how familiar it all felt, and very curious about what was accurate and not, so I started looking at books about the trial in Amazon. I liked what the blurb said about Darden's. It's the first book I've ever read on the subject and I found it remarkably fresh and informative. In addition I found it incredibly insightful about race relations and I feel that is helpful today in a way I never expected from a book about a twenty year old trial. Christopher Darden is a passionate and poetic soul, who tells his own story as he weaves the tale of the trial, so that you're getting an autobiographical insight into his fundamental outlook on life, specifically as it relates to justice and to race, and more specifically racial justice. If you're looking for "just the facts" of the case, you probably won't want to wade through all the extra in this book, but if you like a good read, with depth and subtlety and nuance, you'll enjoy this book. You'll get the nitty gritty of the case and the trial, but you'll be treated, in addition, to the deep insights of a fine mind and a truly decent outlook.

"Smokescreen" Defense

Seems like a large number of us readers and watchers disagreed with the verdict, and even though it was over 20 years ago now, we are still interested in reviewing the facts and evidence once again to see if there is anything we missed. I like the way Mr. Darden laid it all out in an easy to follow style, exposing what I called a "smoke screen defense" the so-called "dream team" put on. And sadly, it worked, confusing the jurors and leading to a shocking "not guilty" verdict.

Worth Reading

Intimate, revealing and engrossing. In Contempt is as much about Chris Darden the man as it is about the OJ Simpson trial. in fact, it could almost be categorized as an autobiography that happens to be framed around "Trial of the Century." You really get a sense of the personal anguish Chris went through during the trial. It's maddening when you consider that he was only doing his job. I appreciated leaning about the bond that Marcia and Chris formed during the trial, Darden's struggle with fatherhood and the pressure he felt as a black man during the trial.

I'd only read one book about the trial prior to reading Mr. Darden's. (Daniel Petrocelli's fantastic, Triumph of Justice) I didn't really expect to learn much more from In Contempt but was pleasantly surprised. It was interesting to learn the glaring (and subtle) differences between the criminal and civil trials. I was already convinced of Simpson's guilt but came away even more repulsed by him and his so-called Dream Team.
