This is the long-awaited fully revised 3rd edition of God's Strategy in Human History by Roger Forster and Paul Marston - one of the most important theological books of the 20th century.
Now split into two volumes, in Volume 1: God’s Path to Victory we explore what the Bible says about how God is working in human history. We look at the conflict between good and evil and at how your personal relationship with God fits into his bigger strategy of bringing in the Kingdom.
This brings fresh meaning to questions like:
- If God is good, why do suffering and evil exist?
- Is God in control of the future?
- Do my prayers make a difference?
- Why did God choose Israel? And is Israel still chosen?
- What is God’s purpose for the Church today?
By looking at these questions in the context of God’s strategy we see how they start to make sense to our Christian lives in the 21st century.
Aside from updating the language of the text to increase readability, revisions include the incorporation of the latest comments from contemporary scholarship on some of the issues. The new edition also presented the authors with the opportunity to respond to critiques of previous editions. Thanks to the substantial overall revision, the new chapters work seamlessly into the argument, and indeed there is a sense that the authors feel that the new material is now essential to completing it.
Following its original publication, God’s Strategy became a key text in several theological seminaries, and is known to have profoundly influenced the views of such theologians as Greg Boyd, who provides a foreword for the new edition. Renowned New Testament scholar I. Howard Marshall also provides a foreword.
Aside from being a key scholarly text, it also became a valuable theological manual for many lay-readers especially in the UK and the USA. The new edition is published with the two audiences in mind. Volume 1: God’s Path to Victory comprises what was originally Part One and Two of the book, containing the substance of the main argument about how God has been working through human history, along with some of the new material, and a summary of the arguments in Volume 2. As such it is aimed at anyone wanting to get to grips with this important subject.
Volume 2: Reconsidering Key Biblical Ideas comprises most of what was Part Three and the Appendix, being aimed more at church leaders and Biblical scholars in its language and structure, going into greater depth with studies of key words and concepts.
The format means that it will work well in church study groups where each member has a copy of Volume 1 and the leader is equipped with Volume 2 if greater insight is required on some of the issues.

One of the Best books I have read
By Jeremy Myers - Writing at RedeemingGod
I read this book (the paperback edition) years ago, and since that time, have consistently placed it in my "Top Ten" books lists that every Christian should read.
When I first read this book, I was a hyper-Calvinist seeking to refute every argument thrown against the "logical system of theology passed down to us through John Calvin from Augustine and the Apostle Paul."
"God's Strategy in Human History" was one of the first books which created some cracks in Calvinism. It is one of the best books I have read.
Whether you are a Calvinist or not, this book will challenge your thinking and allow you to read Scripture and see God in a whole new light.

Predestination was HIJACKED and REMODELED by Men of BLOOD. This 2-Volume Work is Both Rescue and VACCINE.
By Mark Phillips
Note: This review is of the original all-in-one PAPERBACK edition; which I've read three times (a later all-in-one paperback edition has one or two extra chapters; so I hear); furthermore, what I say in this review in regard to election and predestination (EAP), relates more to the content of Volume 2 (than Volume 1).
I here begin with an opening comment on (so-called) "Church History."
I then get into this stellar (now 2-Volume) work; citing three quotes of enormous significance.
I then present a predestination analogy.
I then get into some key points of this work: about mules (see Psalm 32); and the hardening of Egypt's pharaoh.
I also there look at some points of the TULIP.
I then cite a key quote from the (paperback) appendix.
I also suggest pairing this work with a complementary classic.
I conclude by providing links to other key game changers.
Opening Comments:
As far as I'm concerned, much of what passes for "Church History" is a (rather serious) MISNOMER. There are a number of theological camps that have arisen (Eastern Orthodox; Coptic; and so on), but in the West, "Church History" boils down to A Tale of TWO [MONSTROS]Cities: The Trent and TULIP Camps.
"Reformed Protestant" denominations were originally built (like the Catholic "church"), not by the Spirit, but by [magisterial] MIGHT and POWER (note Zechariah 4:6). The Trent and TULIP camps are doctrinally rooted NOT in apostolic doctrine, but in Augustinian distortion; both camps have built their theological superstructures NOT on teachers who made [genuine] disciples, but who made [coerced] churchgoers; NOT on teachers who loved their enemies, but on teachers who said and/or wrote venomous words against them, and who partnered with the state/world, and had the magistrate persecute (and even execute) them. Note John 16:1-3 and Matthew 12:33-37.
The ROOTS of both the Trent and TULIP camps are soaked in the blood of cross-carrying disciples; are they not? Did the founding teachers of either camp know Father and Son? Were they led by the Spirit? Who are men of persistent (state-partnered) violence actually WALKING with? With God? (Note: In CULT-like fashion, TULIP-advocates of our day seek to deny, defend, or ad-hominemize away the REPLUSIVE FRUITS of their doctrinal masters. How utterly disgraceful can it get?!)
Thankfully, although Constantine brought might and power into the [State] "Church" at his "conversion"; and although Augustine then furnished the hybrid entity with [distorted] theology, there has ALWAYS been a line of authentic cross-carrying disciples of Yeshua, who stood strong against the might and power guys, and who were led by the Spirit. This faithful line (beginning with the Donatists), often paid for their authentic disciplehood with their lives; at the hands of the might and power guys who were deluded enough to think that following Yeshua includes state-partnered murder (whether it be murdering outsiders, or genuine cross-carrying disciples).
When Zwingli, Luther and Calvin came alone, rather than bringing Europe back to apostolic doctrine, they simply hammered away the Catholic theology that had been piled high upon Augustinian distortion; and rebuilt afresh upon Augustine's tragic misunderstanding of election and predestination. Furthermore, they simply broke away from the Catholic might and power system, only to build a Protestant version in its place. At that time, it was the "Anabaptists" who were carrying the baton of authenticity (so to speak; and BTW, "Anabaptist" is another MISNOMER: they were NOT seeking to be RE-baptized, for the simple reason that pedobaptism is no baptism at all - they were simply disciples who wanted a scriptural and repentance-based immersion in water); and like the Donatists before them, they again paid for their faithfulness to Yeshua (and Scripture) with their lives.
Roger and Paul's book:
Back in the 1970s, Roger Forster and Paul Marston, penned a work which (in effect) presented the EKKLESIA Bride with a rescue from Augustinian election and predestination (EAP), and which gives readers an understanding of EAP which fits the very TENOR of Holy Scripture; as opposed to the Augustinian view which at first may seem to be a fair take on Romans 9 and John 6, but which flies in the face of the remaining 99% of Scripture (i.e., in the face of Scripture's TENOR).
This (now 2-volume) work is the single best refutation of TULIP Theology that I know of. Interestingly enough, the refutation is somewhat INDIRECT (that is, it is indirect, in the earlier paperback edition: this 2-volume work may have now directly addressed various points of the TULIP): Instead of ATTACKING each of the five TULIP points, readers of this classic work are given a theological tour de force; and that tour de force presentation not only provides reader's with a TENOR-honoring understanding of election and predestination (EAP), it also simultaneously vaccinates them against the five points of the TULIP. Roger and Paul's presentation of a TENOR-honoring understanding of EAP, is perhaps their greatest service to Yeshua and His EKKLESIA.
Augustine's tenor-contrary take on EAP even infects NON-Calvinists to some degree, it is THAT pervasive. But what makes this book so important, is that Augustine's tragic teaching actually serves to UNDERMINE Yeshua's call to genuine holiness of conduct; indeed, it even strengthened the hands of his "Reformation" admirers, to the point where they thought they could torture or even have their enemies put to death. That is how damaging Augustine's misteaching on predestination has been.
Note: Both Calvinist and NON-Calvinist adherents of OSAS (i.e., the idea that if a person is genuinely born again, they cannot fail to be in heaven), often refer to their stance as "Eternal Security." Tragically, there are even in-depth refutations of Calvinism available, which are authored by men who hold to (a NON-Calvinist version of) Eternal Security. Such authors are actually calling their readers from one leaky boat to another; how tragic can it get? Thing is, Messiah Jesus is into something rather different: INTERNAL Security! In other words, those who REMAIN IN HIM (the True Vine) can never be plucked out of His hand; however, those who do NOT remain in Him will be thrown away as branches; their end is the lake of fire. See John 15:1-6. Or is God mocked?
If only Augustine and his 16th century followers had understood the following key quotes/points (from the early paperback edition; which I now presume are found in Volume 2), their hands may not have been strengthened to the point they became as monsters (and untold numbers of authentic disciples of Yeshua might not have been tortured, or even put to death):
Chapter 13: 'We are chosen in Christ. This does not mean that we were chosen to be put into Christ. It does not mean that God chose to make us repent but left others unrepentant! It means that as we repented and were born again into the body of Christ, we partake of his choseness. He is chosen, we are chosen in him.'
Chapter 14: 'Perhaps the most important thing to grasp about predestiny is that it concerns man's future destiny ... Predestiny does not concern who should be converted; it concerns our future destiny. It is not that we are predestined to be Christians, it is rather that as Christians we receive a glorious future destiny.'
Chapter 15: 'A Christian is not chosen to become part of Christ's body, but in becoming part of that body he partakes of Christ's election ... It is not that selected individuals have been destined to join the church, but rather than the church as a whole, as a unit, has received a future destiny.'
My Own Analogy of Pre-DESTINATION:
To try and put predestination in everyday terms, when a bus driver climbs on board his bus to begin his work day (i.e. the bus that was CHOSEN, ELECTED by his boss to use that day), he already knows where he intends to take any passengers - the final DESTINATION of the CHOSEN, ELECT bus, is PRE-arranged/planned (he does not casually decide at the moment he sits behind the steering wheel!); all passengers who FREELY CHOOSE to get on board and REMAIN for the whole outward trip will arrive at that pre-arranged destination (let's call the bus's destination New-Jerusalemville).
The passengers were not predestined TO GET ON the bus; but HAVING GOT ON of their own free will, those who REMAIN/ABIDE on board, partake (so to speak) of that bus's ELECTION and PRE-PLANNED destination (they were free to get off the bus at any point on the journey). Therein lies not the "unfathomable paradox of freewill and predestination," but the basic partnership/dynamics: they sit/remain/abide in the ELECT, PREDESTINED bus; he drives/directs it toward New-Jerusalemville! In Kingdom terms, perhaps one might compare God the Father to the Bus COMPANY OWNER/BOSS; the HOLY Sprit to the Driver; and the Bus itself to God the Son's BODY/Bride.
I would NOT say that was an infallible comparison, illustration and solution, to something that has puzzled sincere Bible students for centuries; but I certainly believe it to be truer to the TENOR of God-breathed Scripture, than the TULIP's version of election and predestination that has so catastrophically gripped and falsely comforted the minds of so many disciples.
To put it in a nutshell, "Calvinists" think of predestination as if it meant preSELECTION of certain individuals in eternity PAST; whereas predestination actually means God has a PRE(-planned)DESTINY for those in Messiah Yeshua (i.e., the Body) in eternity FUTURE. Calvinists think predestination means God has preselected certain individuals to be PUT INTO the Body; but predestination means He has PLANS FOR the Body. Calvinists think God has preselected certain individuals to be PUT INTO Messiah; whereas actually, having believed INTO Messiah of their own free will, disciples in Him are predestined to walk on gold (in the new Jerusalem). Predestination basically means the living God is not making it up as He goes along (as He sits behind the steering wheel): He has a wedding planned for His Son and the Body; and, He has a new earth and a new Jerusalem planned too. PreDESTINATION is about God bringing the Body (and history) from A, to (a prepared/planned) B-DESTINATION/outcome/FUTURE; whereas TULIP-advocates think it means God has preDETERMINED (in eternity PAST) the particular individuals He is going to take from A to B.
Mules; Pharoah; the TULIP:
"God's Strategy in Human History" is at the VERY MEATY end of the spectrum. For me, one of the most informative sections of all, is Roger and Paul's discussion of the hardening of Pharoah's heart; and what being hardened by God actually means/involves (you'll find it in Volume 2). Also, (and I presume you'll find it in Volume 1), Roger and Paul bring Psalm 32 onto the table, where God tells man not to be like a mule that MUST have a Bit 'n' Bridle fitted FIRST, BEFORE it will comply.
TULIP Theology is basically Bit 'n' Bridle Theology in all but name; for in TULIP thinking, God has stocked the world with Tom, Dick and Harriet Mules (so to speak; and this is the T of the TULIP; which they call "Total Depravity," and which I here rename: Totally Mules; in fact, given what TULIP-advocates believe, MULE-IP may be an alternative system title). Basically, TULIP-advocates have been led to believe that God is a sort of puppeteer who controls the will of every Tom, Dick and Harriet Mule, and then sends them to hell for what they did under His control; and for their stubborn refusal to repent. Seems rather like sending dogs to hell for barking, or ducks for quacking. Does that sound like the Father of Jesus to you? Does that sound like the God who is AGAPE to you?
Personally, I simply cannot match the Calvinist view of God, with God as revealed in the TENOR of Holy Scripture. Can you? A Calvinist would be very quick to correct any Jehovah Witness who tried to cherry-pick a sentence/TEXT (such as John 14:28), if a JW made a TENOR-defying attempt to claim Jesus was not equal to the Father; and yet, when it comes to the past, present and future aspects of salvation, Calvinists are just as quick to behave in the very same way: disregarding the very TENOR of Genesis to Revelation, and cherry-picking sentences here 'n' there, in a TENOR/Psalm-32-defying attempt to defend the puppeteer ideas of the TULIP/MULE-IP.
Figuratively speaking, in the view of a TULIP-advocate/Calvinist, "election" basically means being chosen by God in eternity past, to be the recipient of "Irresistible Grace" (the I of the TULIP); and, at some point in this "elected" person's life, to be fitted by God with a (repentance-enabling) Bit 'n' Bridle (the Augustinian version of election being the U of the TULIP: "Unconditional Election").
In "God's Strategy in Human History," the TENOR-honoring point being made by Roger and Paul, is that in contrast to TULIP Theology (and in line with God's OWN theology; so to speak!!!), mankind are NOT (totally depraved) mules. Note: Not to mention the Calvinist idea of "Limited Atonement" (the L of the TULIP ), whereby it is thought Yeshua only came to atone for those His Father has preselected - such a notion defies God's theology, which is nutshelled rather nicely in Ezekiel 18 (by the way, also note Jeremiah 18; a pottery/theology lesson TULIP-advocates have failed to learn). For me at least, those two things (on hardening and mules), really stood out.
The (paperback) appendix:
The appendix on Augustine (in my paperback edition), is to me, one of the MOST IMPORTANT parts of the entire work, for it reveals two MAJOR (and VERY TELLING) points: First, the novel and UNORTHODOX nature of his views (as compared to leading Bible teachers of the first 300 years of the Body, who did NOT share Augustine's INEXPERTISE in Greek). Second, the COERCION with which he established his distorted views on EAP.
Note this key appendix quote: "An appeal to the times [to excuse the violence!] is not convincing [I'll say!; I thought it was the NARROW - agape - Way; not the world's way!]. It becomes still less convincing when we are told, often by the same [TULIP-advocate] apologists, that those like Calvin and Augustine were the most competent Bible teachers in history ... The tragic fact is surely that those who deny any power but God's, and hence reduce everyone including Satan to servants of God, may (if times are ripe) finish by using Satan's own weapons of fear, force, pain and persecution [as opposed to genuinely following Messiah Yeshua who is AGAPE, and AGAPEYING one's enemies] ... Augustine directly linked it [persecution] with his theological system."
On PAIRING this (now 2-Volume) work:
Given TULIP Theology grips and veils the EKKLESIA as pervasively as it does, I would say this 2-volume work is REQUIRED READING; BOTH volumes mind you! But as mentioned at the start of this review, that poisonous theological system was established by state-partnered might and power. The TULIP Theology baton (so to speak) is caked in "Anabaptist" blood. Therefore, in order to fully VACCINATE (as yet uninfected) disciples against TULIP Theology (and also to bring as many TULIP-advocates to their senses as possible), I would therefore say that this 2-volume work should ideally be paired with another book: with a work that focuses on the REPULSIVE means by which that poisonous theology was established. Namely, with "The Reformers and Their Stepchildren" by Leonard Verduin. You then have yourself a classic refutation of TULIP Theology, paired with a classic account of the bloody means by which TULIP Theology HIJACKED orthodoxy.
The Reformers and Their Stepchildren (Dissent and Nonconformity) Note the following key quotes: "They [i.e., the leaders of the 'Magisterial Reformation' - the men behind TULIP Theology] constantly urged the magistrate to draw the blood of the opposition." (Chapter 1.) Zwingli's successor, Henry Bullinger, said this: "It is wrong, say they [OPPONENTS of the Magisterial Reformation], to compel anyone by force or coercion to embrace the faith, or, to put anyone to death because of erring faith." (Chapter 2.)
Other key works, including three GAME CHANGERS:
GAME CHANGER 1: The Normal Christian Birth: How to Give New Believers a Proper Start in Life David Pawson's game changer and "Rolls Royce" opus on scriptural, TRINITARIAN evangelism. Indeed, it is one of the finest books outside of Holy Writ, on industrial-strength evangelism, and CONTINUOUS, 36-INCH repentance and faith. (Messiah's YARDSTICK: Luke 14:25-35.) Note: David Pawson has served Yeshua from the age of 17; but, it was not until another seventeen years had passed (in 1964), that he understood what it was to RECEIVE and be BAPTIZED/IMMERSED in the Holy Spirit in a manner consistent with Scripture/Acts. David does not want anyone else to have to wait that long; his own inadequate initiation perhaps explains why making sure responders have been PROPERLY evangelized is one of the biggest burdens of his life.
GAME CHANGER 2: Remarriage is Adultery Unless For centuries, the remarriage issue has been A Tale of TWO [False] Exceptions. Courtesy of failing to understand two pairs of Greek words (PORNEIA and MOICHEIA; and DOULOO and DEO), the Ekklesia has furnished itself with two FALSE exceptions: 1) ADULTERY (through not understanding the difference between PORNEIA and MOICHEIA). 2) DESERTION (through not understanding the difference between DOULOO and DEO). This game changer RESTORES Genesis-implemented ONE FLESH (Lifelong) Marriage (Genesis 2:24).
GAME CHANGER 3: Pagan Christianity?: Exploring the Roots of Our Church Practices Viola and Barna's game changer on the UNSCRIPTURAL foundations of the "Institutional Church." Quoting from the preface by Tyndale House Publishers: "Perhaps you wonder why a publisher of Christian books would release a book that questions so many common church practices ... they [Frank Viola and George Barna] are asking us to thoughtfully consider the source of our churches' traditions and then ask how these practices square with Scripture ... Many in the church hold to tradition, even if it is not grounded in Scripture, and these same people wonder why the church seems to be losing its relevance and impact in the contemporary world."
God's Strategy in Human History: Volume 1 - God's Path to Victory On apostolic (vs Augustinian) predestination. Get BOTH volumes.
Leadership is Male: What does the Bible say? On gender roles; foreworded by Elisabeth Elliot (no less).
**********
General Comment: I've read dozens of books ABOUT Scripture: autobiographies; accounts of so-called "Church History"; Scripture overviews; and books that tackle various heresies. But I have limited my book reviews on Amazon, to the mere fraction that I would recommend to others: to books which collectively bring people up to speed on the last 2,000 years; and which provide both vaccine and remedy against some of the most pernicious teachings that have arisen - including (but alas, not only!) Replacement Theology; Replacement SPOUSE-ology (divorce and "remarriage"); Cessationism; Eternal Security (OSAS; Calvinism/Reformed Theology); PRE-Trib Theology ("Dispensationalism"); "Sinner's Prayer" (and largely BINITARIAN) evangelism; and the (1 Samuel 8 DEJA VU) Building-Pulpit-Pew model.
Scripture teachers have a tendency to bring out book after book (after book!); authoring perhaps a lifetime total of millions of fallible words. Add a few teachers together, and you're talking TENS of millions of fallible words; thereby reducing the 800,000 words of Holy Scripture, to a drop in the ocean of (albeit sincere) DISTORTION. Worse still (and deny it to the hilt though many readers will), that ocean of distortion embedded between their ears, becomes the HEAD (and a theological lens/VEIL); Scripture the TAIL.
