Review
An essential resource for educators and others who work with children. --James P. Comer, MD, Yale University School of Medicine

Yardsticks is an indispensable resource for educators who want to be responsive to the needs, talents, and aspirations of all the children they teach. --Larry Dieringer, Executive Director, Educators for Social Responsibility

From the Author
Practical info to help parents/teachers understand children. This book is about children in school. It is designed for both parents and teachers and provides easy reference to expectations about children's growth and development in the classroom. I have tried in this small volume to consolidate a good deal of theory with years of professional experience in schools. My goal is to present important information in a readable format without compromising the key ideas passed down from the worlds of anthropology, child development, pediatrics and education. I hope you will find the information about a particular age immediately useful, and will also be captured by the obvious patterns of development. Enjoy the book. I hope you find it useful in your work with children.

About the Author
Chip Wood has been a K-8 teacher, principal, and teacher educator for over 35 years. He is a co-founder of Center for Responsive Schools.

This has been a useful book in my work as child and family therapist
By BofHope
This has been a useful book in my work as child and family therapist. I regularly use it to help parents understand what is to be expected -- or not expected -- of their children academically and socially at whatever age they are at. I do wish it were updated to take into consideration more recent research, particularly on how complex trauma, poverty, racism, sexism, and other adverse environments affect kids. But it is still useful as is.

recommended for parents
By Lynne B. Tagawa
As an educator and former homeschooling parent, this book is a great accessible resource for parents and teachers alike. Some have criticized this book as being shallow or incomplete. But this is not a college textbook. It is a handbook, especially beneficial to those who have not the time or interest to delve deeply into the subject. Homeschooling parents in particular would be well advised to start here before making expensive curriculum choices. It may also be a means of discerning whether your child has true problems or is being pushed beyond his developmental abilities by his teacher.

Enrich Your Knowledge of Child Development
By Pamela Wilson
Should be in the hands of EVERY teacher, especially those who want to really understand the developmental stages of their children. I know you think you already know it, but this book adds another level of wisdom. Great help in designing appropriate activities and lessons.

In a society where religion is increasingly private, and faith is OK as long as it s not shared, many would seek to keep God out of their politics. But is that right, and is it biblical? This is an important topic to consider, not just for those working in government, but for all of us as we seek to be responsible citizens in a fallen world. Mark Dever unpacks what the Bible has to say on this topic, and teaches how we can Give back to Caesar what is Caesar s without compromising on what we believe. We ll see that our duty to God is comprehensive and that there isn t an area of life that we can separate from His influence. This little book won t take long to read, but its impact could last a lifetime.

Mark Dever has provided an insightful exposition of what it means for us to render unto Caesar what is Caesar s, casting a positive vision for Christian engagement in politics. Highly recommended. --Sam Allberry, author of Is God anti Gay?

This is a little book full of big surprises. There are many books about God and politics but few that are all about Jesus and very few that are about one verse in the bible. Mark Dever superbly unpacks Jesus surprising response to his opponents question, which Jeremy Paxman would have been proud of is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? He has become every politicians favourite author by daring to thank us for doing God s work . But Mark does not let you or me get away with just giving that coin back to Caesar given his clarion call to give yourself to God . He sets out Jesus wonderful vision which goes deeper and higher than politics. It leads us to grow in our respect for politics and our hope for better to come. --David Burrowes, UK Member of Parliament

Dever is the bees knees.

From his pastorate steps from the Capitol and Supreme Court he knows a lot about the relationship between the gospel and politics. A shirt little book with many helpful insights on the topic.

Disappointed
By Atlanta Reviewer
This book is little more than a restatement of the traditional Protestant position relative to government. I do not understand why it was written. The book provides little critical insight or analysis. Compare classics written by Niebuhr and Yoder. I wonder if this book was written to provide handout to Pastor Dever's congregation?

A Place Where the Sea Remembers (Scribner's Paperback Fiction), by Sandra Benitez

Finalist for the Los Angeles Times book award and winner of the Minnesota Book Award, A Place Where the Sea Remembers is a timeless classic, a mesmerizing world filled with love, betrayal, tragedy, and hope.

This rich and bewitching story is a bittersweet portrait of the people in Santiago, a Mexican village by the sea. Chayo, the flower seller, and her husband Candelario, the salad maker, are finally blessed with the child they thought they would never have. Their cause for happiness, however, triggers a chain of events that impact the lives of everyone in their world.

The hopes, triumphs, failures, and shortcomings of the novel’s enchanting array of characters create a graceful picture of life that is both a universal portrait and an insider’s look at life in Latin America.

From Publishers Weekly
Latina writer Benitez begins her excellent debut novel with a painful event--the wait for a drowned body to float to shore--and works backwards, retracing the myriad, seemingly insignificant steps that led to the character's death. As in Like Water for Chocolate , this novel sympathetically explores the lives of Mexican women caught in a mystical, fatalistic world. Chayo, a flower seller, and her sister Marta, a chambermaid, live in a poverty-stricken village by the sea. When 15-year-old Marta is raped and becomes pregnant, seemingly barren Chayo and her husband, Candelario, agree to take the child. Soon after, however, Chayo discovers that she too is expectant and reneges on the promise. Livid, Marta arranges with el brujo , the witch doctor, to put a curse on her sister's child. Both women bear sons, and a remorseful Marta tells her sister about the curse, which she claims to have had removed by la curandera , the healer. But when Chayo's son almost dies after being bitten by fire ants, the sisters' relationship once more deteriorates and, inexorably, the tragedy presaged in the book's opening chapter comes to pass. Benitez's unsparing vision into the stark realities of village residents' lives offers a poignant counterpoint to superficial vacation snapshots of Mexico.

From School Library Journal
YA-In the small Mexican town of Santiago, childless Chayo and her husband find their prayers answered when they agree to adopt the unborn child of Marta, Chayo's sister. When Chayo becomes pregnant and they change their mind about adoption, Marta has a witch doctor put a curse on Chayo's unborn baby, setting in motion a series of tragic events. Characters, presented individually by the author and then woven together by plot, attach themselves to readers' sensibilities, and lull them into believing in the goodness of life in this sleepy seaside community. However, all this cultural richness is poised for tragedy when divine retribution takes over.
Ginny Ryder, Lee High School, Fairfax County, VA

From Library Journal
This emotionally gripping, though flawed first novel tells a story of life and death in the Mexican village of Santiago. When the infertile Chayo unexpectedly conceives, she and her husband renege on their promise to raise her sister's unwanted child as their own, setting in motion a chain of events that ultimately result in tragedy. The author displays an exceptionally keen sense of detail and creates interesting people whose very different lives lend variety to the narrative. However, the book suffers from an abundance of underdeveloped characters and story lines, which at times render it rather unsatisfactory. The inclusion of an apparently supernatural element works potently at a visual level but makes no substantive contribution to the novel and may prompt readers to wonder if Benitez is simply hopping on the bandwagon of Magical Realism. Recommended for libraries with a strong interest in Latino literature.

THE DISQUIETING TRUTH
By RR
I would like to see several of the previous reviewers address the following:

-- In 1969, a Col. MacArthur testified to Congress, requesting $10 million for the Pentagon to develop, WITHIN 10 YEARS, synthetic viruses that would be "refractory" (i.e., resistant) to the human immunological system. Congress granted the monies. Much of the resulting work was carried out at Fort Dietrich, Maryland, the Army's main bio-warfare laboratory.

-- Within several years virologists began describing in the medical journals their experiments with new laboratory developed viruses being tested on cattle, who began to exhibit the symptoms of a "slow, wasting disease."

-- Later, some of these same gov't. researchers proposed, since human experimentation was "considered unethical," introducing these new

viruses covertly by combining them with other experimental drugs for human testing.

-- Next, the WHO conducted the largest innoculation campaign in history in Africa -- which now has the highest incidence of HIV in the world.

-- Then, the NIH conducted the voluntary innoculation campaigns for Hepatitus among the gay communities in New York and San Francisco.

-- Within a year, circa 1979-1980, the first cases of the strange new cancer-like disease started to appear almost simultaneously in the gay communities in those two areas (such simultaneous geographic diversity for the start of a new disease is impossible in nature).

--Then, in the early 1980's, when independent researchers saw the annual gov't. published percentage of population/infection ratio rising dramatically each year in these two test groups (with a trend line that appeared to be heading toward 100%) and started questioning this, the gov't. STOPPED PUBLISHING THE DATA.

--And, to put this in its proper political context, it was the same time frame as the Right and the Religious Right were coming into national political power with the election of 1980, and their overwhelming hatred of gays and the new sexual freedom that had developed in the 1960's and 1970's.

Read this and the author's previous book, "Aids and the Doctors of Death" along with David Horowitz's books; there is a great deal more chilling evidence to show how the new bio-technology has enabled the far right to pursue their fascistic ends much more secretly and efficiently than their German Nazi counterparts.

Does the Sea Remember
By Sherie
I enjoyed the contents of the Benetiz compilation of stories. Each had a full meaning and connects to each reader through feelings of pain, loss, guilt, longing and so much more. Benitez entitles the story very well, because even though all the stories are separate, they intertwine in this town, Santiago, which is close by the sea. It relates to a sailors own tales, and even though the sea is rough and forceful at times, it holds many stories full of love and heartache. Remedios is part of the sea and in tune with nature so much that she knows the troubles of every one. The main focus shifted every so often, but in general I think Benitez wanted to say that we can bury or throw away our painful pasts, but anyday, it may be dragged back to us by the foaming sea currents. Our pasts will either drag us down, or kill us, it is what we do for the future that ensures whether it is true or not. And making the right choices isn't always the easiest thing to do when life doesn't have many options for a tourist town like Santiago. Even the town itself is meaningful. It contains many lives that nonetheless are dreamful and hopeful, but not changing as much as they would like.

Chapeau!
By Jon Hancock
"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" disappointed a number of Indy fans, perhaps surprised at the darker tone of the second film, and is generally regarded as the weakest film of what is currently a trilogy. Not so the novelisation.
Whereas the first book was a turgid and often plodding slog this second volume gets the tone absolutely spot-on. The joy of the Indiana Jones films is that they are are B-movies, big budget and carefully crafted, but essentially homages to the Saturday serials and action adventures of the thirties, and the novelisation of "Raiders" seemed to entirely miss that point, and thus failed to capture the thrills and flavour of the cinema version. It cannot be easy writing a novel based on a screenplay anyway, since there is a severe time constraint and the very real possibility that the finished movie may veer dramatically (ahem... no pun intended) from the early written version. This is certainly one reason for a few of the more disappointing scene changes in the "Raiders" novel.
"Temple," however, is much closer to the finished film, adding to it by way of thoughts and motivations for the characters but thankfully avoiding the trap of getting mired down in efforts to produce a "serious" work. James Kahn's book is slim and has rather large type when compared to the first and third novelisations, but in this case I regard that as a plus.
The pace is furious, the action as ripsnorting as you could wish and even - goodness, I can't believe I'm saying it - Short Round actually comes over as rather a good character, which is more than you can say for the film. Indeed, going back to the movie after reading this book I found that my disappointment with the second film had abated somewhat. It is still a less exciting ride than "Raiders" and not such a glorious romp as "Crusade," yet there is much to enjoy on screen and especially in this book. A pity that Mr Kahn did not pen the later original Indy novels, as they would have been vastly improved by a writer with a keen sense of what a damn good B-movie should be all about. Hats off, indeed.

The Meaning of Fossils: Episodes in the History of Palaeontology, by Martin J. S. Rudwick

"It is not often that a work can literally rewrite a person's view of a subject. And this is exactly what Rudwick's book should do for many paleontologists' view of the history of their own field."—Stephen J. Gould, Paleobotany and Palynology

"Rudwick has not merely written the first book-length history of palaeontology in the English language; he has written a very intelligent one. . . . His accounts of sources are rounded and organic: he treats the structure of arguments as Cuvier handled fossil bones."—Roy S. Porter, History of Science

Good Modern Science History
By Russell Cashman
I only gave this book 4 stars because parts of it can be a little difficult to follow, but anyone really interested in the history of science in general or the largely neglected history of paleontology in particular will find a wealth of fascinating information within it. For example it untangles what Cuvier really thought about geological catastrophes from the beliefs of the English geologists who used his work in support of natural theology, a topic on which there has been considerable confustion, especially in the English speaking world. Rudwick is careful to treat each topic in proper historical context that lets you understand what the people involved and their contemporaries really thought about what they were doing, not just what those developments would mean to the future. This book was written more than a decade before the "Science Wars" of the 1990's but it clearly demonstrates that it is possible to find a middle way and write science history in a way that puts each development in the proper philosophical and social context for its time, without loosing track of the fact that science is a progressive activity in which knowledge builds on itself and improves over time. The discussion of the complexities of the pre 18th century debate on the nature and origin of fossils, which seems so obvious to us today, but was far from obvious at the time, is alone worth the price of the book.

A "must read" for palaeontology students!
By Alan R. Holyoak
Rudwick chose the title "The Meaning of Fossils: Episodes in the History of Palaeontology" for his book, but I think that a subtitle more descriptive of the contents would be something like "Essays on the History of Palaeontology." A subtle difference, perhaps, but meaningful, since in many respects this book is about the people behind the fossils as much as it is about fossils themselves.
The book includes the following contents:
1) Fossil objects -- this section presents ideas about what people thought fossils were before they realized they were related in any way to once-living things. It also includes early work on fossils, their descriptions, the light bulb going on about where fossils really come from, and related topics.
2) Natural antiquities -- this section presents an example describing how we came to the realization that fossils really are parts and pieces of things that were one alive -- all from study of fossil and living sharks' teeth. This section also describes alternative explanations (from antiquity) that explain where fossils came from...interesting stuff.
3) Life's revolutions -- this section describes Cuvier's work and evidence he presented that showed that there is, in fact, a process of extinction that operates on earth. This thought, that a kind of living thing (a species), that was once alive are all now dead was a revolutionary thought! This section also introduces the notion of geologic time...deep time, of a length not realized or considered before...another revolution in thought.
4) Uniformity and progress -- this section includes a description of Lyell's new view of geology and geologic processes, that an ongoing gradual process of small magnitude can, over long periods of time produce all observable geological features. That idea fed into the new ideas being applied to fossils, the appearance and disappearance of fossil species.
5) Life's ancestry -- this section discusses the importance of actually looking and seeing for one's self, as Heinrich-Georg Bronn's work did by "Being taught by nature (Natura doceri)." There is also a discussion of what "species" means, and how that plays into the whole idea of fossil and extinct things as described by the evolutionary theories of Wallace and Darwin.
This is a good book with good examples. It provides an excellent historical perspective on the development of thinking relative to palaeontology. This book should be read by every student of palaeontology, and by most biology students as well!
Great stuff!
5 stars all the way (though the title could use a little work).

A history of the meaning of fossils
By Laurence Chalem
If you're looking for specific fossils and their meaning, this isn't the book for you. For those, see nearly anything paleontology. This book, painstakingly written, presents a history of the meaning of fossils, starting with the first book on the subject written by Gesner in the 16th century. Highly recommended if you appreciate well-written books authored by retired professors that still care about what's taught in their field.
