A new look at Italy in the World!

R. J. B. Bosworth. Italy and the Wider World 1860-1960. London and New York: Routledge, 1996, 252 pages.
Richard Bosworth describes himself in the preface to this volume as "the canguro of Italian historiography" (p. x). The image is appropriate not only because he is the most well-known Australian Italianist but also because of the wide range of territory he covers in the eight chapters of this peculiar study. This is not a standard history of Italian foreign policy or of some temporal, geographical, or substantial aspects of it. What Bosworth does here is to synthesise his earlier writing as well as anticipate the results of some of his current research and integrate them with what is essentially a critique of the existing literature on the subject (the volume has 52 pages of notes). The result is a masterful, critical overview of both Italian history of foreign relations and its historiography, a feat that only senior scholars can usually pull off. In the introduction Bosworth makes an interesting distinction between what he calls `legal' and `real' Italy. The first, "driven by a costly and perhaps irrational desire to mimic an imagined past, played the games of European Great Power politics and sought to seize territory in the mare nostrum and its hinterland. The `real' Italies, by contrast, through emigration laid the bases of the commercial and cultural empires of the future, in New York, and Buenos Aires, Kenya and Australia" (p. 3). This distinction is based on Bosworth's adherence to the Bielefeld school's precept that the study of "diplomacy and other forms of international policy should be placed in their social and economic context" (p. 7). In the book, however, Bosworth fails to adhere to this canon fully. He certainly pays attention to "the history of labour markets and financial practices, emigration and ideology, tourism and leisure, philosophy and sociology, and power in its fluctuating and manifold political, social and economic forms" (p. 7) but more than integrating these different historical fragments into a histoire totale, he deals with them in sequence. Thus, the interesting distinction between `real' and `legal' Italy is reflected more in the organization of this volume than in the treatment of the material. Bosworth, in any case, is conscious of this limitation since he admits that "this short book is scarcely the appropriate base from which to launch an historiographical revolution" (p. 13). Every revolution, however, begins with a first shot, and this is a well aimed one. The first five chapters are devoted to `legal' Italy. Bosworth tackles, in turn, Italian diplomacy within European power politics (chapters 1 and 2), the Italian military in war and peace (chapter 3), Italian commercial policies (chapter 4) and the rise and fall of the Italian empire (chapter 5). It is impossible to summarise the content of these five chapters in a book review since Bosworth touches upon basically every topic that has been the subject of debate among historians. All along, he interprets, rebuts, integrates and systematises. Overall, Bosworth claims that there was continuity in the diplomatic efforts of Liberal, Fascist and (First) Republic regimes. Lacking the necessary strength to challenge the status quo, they had to engage in tortuous and interminable diplomatic manoeuvres to attain marginal gains. In tackling the history of Italian commerce, Bosworth agrees with Rosario Romeo's affirmation (although he disagrees with him on almost everything else) "that a United Italy could only make sense if it succeeded economically" and pushes this view to its logical conclusion by stating that "such success remains the fundamental justification for the retention of an Italian nation state" (p. 78). Not surprisingly, after an initial "na�ve reliance on the market" by the end of World War I "the state had become the basic motor of Italian industrial growth" (p. 85). Bosworth's overall evaluation of Italy's imperial ambitions and adventures is a trenchant one: "bathetic." It proved costly and did not resolve Italy's demographic problem, which was the rationalization usually given to justify efforts in this area. The last three chapters of the book deal with "real' Italy. Chapter 6 looks at emigration, while chapter 7 examines culture and ideology. The last chapter is devoted to a neglected area of Italian studies: tourism. Such a neglect seems surprising since "in the century from 1860 to 1960, Italy's biggest and most lucrative industry, the one certainly with the largest number of employees and perhaps with the most satisfied customers, was tourism" (p. 159). Bosworth examines primarily the origins, development and organisation of this industry and makes some occasional forays into its impact on the perception of Italy and Italian products abroad. In the past Bosworth has been occasionally criticized for what Christopher Seton-Watson has called the "excessively moralistic and condemnatory" tone of his writings on Italy (see his review of this same volume in Modern Italy, 1, 2, Autumn 1996: 110-112). I find Bosworth's tone to be occasionally sarcastic, but this appears to me as a strength rather than a weakness. It helps the reader keep things in perspective and makes the reading more interesting and often even enticing. The volume is to be particularly recommended to doctoral students grappling with the literature on Italian foreign relations and looking for a thesis topic. Almost every paragraph in this book, in fact, provides a point of departure for further research. The only major problem with this volume is its price: $ 90.95 Canadian seem excessive. Bosworth, however, can hardly be faulted for this.

I'm finally awake after 3 year nap

I am realizing just how much I took myself out of the game of life after our youngest daughter passed away about 3 years ago. She was almost 6 years old and I was 33. At 36 years young I felt one and a half decades older than my body. With the help of Gary's words, I realize that I am my hero and, ultimately, this is really good news for me. I was so busy waiting for things to get better that I wasn't in action about living a happy life despite the fact that my youngest is no longer physically in it. Certainly, I will always miss her, but I can experience joy, peace, passion, and excitement as well. I feel compelled to drive forward with a velocity that inspires me. I started singing again (in the car, around the house, even at my office)...I hadn't noticed that it was gone for 3 years until it showed up again. Many thanks for the opportunity this book gives me to take the bull by the horns and to be responsible for my present and future. I am so relieved! Seriously, that sounds so weird. Who would have thought that me being responsible would leave me feeling relief? ha! It's so true though. I feel like I am finally awake after an extended nap. Thanks for the wake up call, Gary John Bishop.

Never See A Tree Just As A Tree Again!

This is a truly lovely book with an underlying sense of kindness and gentleness. We all know that trees are living entities, but we forget the gifts they offer us. And Sharlyn offers us a truly healing gift in her gentle, straightforward way of introducing us to these amazing beings that share their healing energies with us, not just their material gifts.

For those interested in historical and technical aspects of the spiritual journeys through the Celtic tree calendar, Sharlyn does a beautiful job of clearly and simply showing the relationship between the Celtic tree calendar, the ogham, totems, the runes, and Astrology. Her guided journeys take you to beautiful places and to beautiful beings, including your own ancestors, that bless, comfort and heal you.

At the end of the chapter on "Willow" Sharlyn writes, "I hope the Willow, in all her grace and power, will never be just another tree to you ever again!". Well I can truly say, no tree will ever be just another tree to me ever again.

Practical Spiritual Wisdom

I love this book! There is a Celtic tree for each calendar month and Sharlyn shares not only the healing properties of each tree but shares how
to really connect with these living beings. In a practical sense, she shows us many wise ways to connect to this wisdom. The Celtic rune system is mentioned, the healing properties of each tree and thoughts of how to journey with these powerful allies through art and dreamtime are inspiring and I can see that I shall be using and rereading this gem of a book for many years. Not only that, but the illustrations are beautiful, the entire experience is lovely. I am so excited to have this on my bookshelf and to share with my friends.

They give us so much more than the air we breathe

Sharlyn's book is beautiful--not only the drawings of the trees, but also the healing, generous sharing of the historical and her personal truths. I love the range of information, from meditations with the spirits of trees to how often to prune them. I start my day with the meditation for the tree appropriate for that month. As a result, each day, I feel a lovely, peaceful grounding, and a strong sense of oneness with the earth. I have purchased this book for friends, who, like me, love trees and gardening and pressing their toes in the earth. They love the book! I want to thank the author for this lovely gift. I'm eagerly awaiting her next publication.

About the Author

Born in Gdynia in 1977, Adam Nergal Darski is a Polish musician and singer best known as the leader of the international renowned black metal group Behemoth, with whom he has recorded ten studio albums across three decades, the most recent of which is The Satanist. This is his first book.

Epic Interview and an overall fascinating read

I received one of the first wave of 1400 signed copies shipped from the Behemoth webstore, and managed to pace myself so that I didn't devour it in one sitting. Nergal is an extremely good interviewee (I've probably read every single interview in existence online in addition to watching every single video interview that can be found) and this book does not disappoint. He takes as much of an unflinching look at himself as at everything/everyone around him and is never anything short of completely forthright in his explanations of how he got to where he is now, and why he sees the world the way he does in regards to music, art, religion, freedom. Particularly riveting (and inspiring) are the chapters about his fight-to-the-death with leukemia, as one might expect. He never gives up, just will not concede defeat, Even if he has to commit apostasy "armed to the teeth" with a stack of papers, two friends and a baby for backup against an equally tenacious priest determined to keep him "in the fold." One of the funnier moments in this book.

My only complaint - not enough photographs. Only two sections to be found, would have loved at least 2 more. But overall, he knocked it out of the park, so to speak, and I'm grateful he lived to tell his story.

Ordered and received a signed copy from the Behemoth web store. Nergal's book is unique in its format, content and appearance. Its not a memoir ( although the sum of its parts could be said amount to one) -- more a series of at-times awkward interrogations over a period of time. The result is something you just can't put down. Enough said -- go and buy it. It's as good as music related biography/ autobiography gets. Fantastic quality and feel too for a book at this price.

This is an incredible book, even if you're not a fan of Behemoth. The views that Nergal has and his description of what he went through while fighting leukemia and his attitude towards it is very impressive. I found it to be invigorating and also made me question some of my own views, inspiring me to look deeper into my own thoughts. Very good read

Brutality in Yesteryear.

This book describes in candid, disturbing terms the awful degree of brutality suffered by the Negro slaves particularly during the ocean passage from Africa to the New World. How could one human being treat another with such totally insensitive disregard? Enlightening.

Great, concise work on American Slavery

This was one of the assigned readings, and I have to say that i found it the most informative, well supported, and enjoyable resource on the topic that we have yet used. i highly recommend this short book to anyone interested in the history of Slavery as an institution.
