Choosing to stop futile suffering

What was vaguely addressed in this book was that suicide because of depression or mental problems is a very poor choice and should not be the first option but euthanasia for those suffering agonizing, debilitating illness should be a choice made when the mind of the victim is still lucid enough to make such a final decision. If you were in excruciating pain from which there was no relief, bedridden, and no hope for any quality of life ever, you might give this book 5 stars. In that situation, you would fully understand why ending life may be the very best thing to do for yourself. I deducted one star because the problem of suicide because of depression needed to be further discussed and discouraged more strongly.

Tales of tragedy

This is a difficult book to read. Not because it is poorly written, on the contrary, but because of the stories contained within. In it the author describes the steps taken by several people in order to end their own lives (mostly through overdoses), in some cases through the direct help of close relatives, with one story covering the death of the author's first wife. These stories serve as the argument for the means of committing suicide being made available, and being accepted by society, and shows how terminally ill people may preserve their dignity by taking their lives into their own hands. In addition, two of the stories show the trouble that may result from the lack of assistance in such an endeavor, and the additional pain that may result when clumsy attempts fail and the people involved have to go further than should ever be necessary (shooting, asphyxiation).

The book also contains advice on how to commit suicide, for those who are actually contemplating such a thing, and gives good advice as to how to approach the subject, stressing an open dialogue with the nearest and dearest. However, the advise is in my opinion limited, and I would not suggest that anybody uses this book as their only reference, should they be contemplating suicide. However, as this is the first book directly dealing with this subject that I've read, I can as of yet offer no advice on other material.

Another reviewer pointed out the lack of a real discussion of when suicide is warranted, which I agree with. There is a short disclaimer in the beginning of the book against "irrational suicide", but a longer discussion of this would have been usable, preferably with resources for those who need it. However, given the origin of this book as a leaflet for members of the Hemlock Society, this lack is not surprising, and therefore I will not subtract from the rating that I've chosen.

To conclude: Should you be interested in the subject, then this book is definitely worth reading.

The title says it all -- I don't want a lot of suffering before it's my time to go. God will go me a great favor if he "Lets me die before I wake." I watched my wonderful mother and father suffer horribly (years apart from each other); it would have been so much easier for them If they had died in their sleep.

Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., is clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, co-director of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center, and executive director of the Mindsight Institute. A MUST READ FOR ALL PARENTS

The reviewers that gave this book less than 4-5 stars are exactly the people that need to re read this book. We see the world through the lens of memory and everything in our past influences our behavior. While this is not a " how to " manual for solving certain problems step by step with our children, it is a much deeper and longer lasting fix. It helps the reader to self examine and become the kind of parent they want to be instead of the kind of parent that they are programmed to be based on their family history.
I think this is a fantastic book for parents that are serious about being the best people they can be for their children. I wish it was written 30+ years ago when I had my first child.
If you are fairly intelligent and want to prepare yourself to be the best parent you can be ( any age child ) - do yourself and your kids a favor. Get the book. I wish they taught this stuff in school.

Practical Attachment Theory

I don't have children and don't plan to have children. I bought this for myself to understand Attachment Styles and the Adult Attachment Interview. This is an excellent guide to parenting. I share it with clients who have children and with those who don't so they can gain insight into their own attachment style.

Maybe the most important parenting book ever written!

This book will help you be a better parent at any point in your life. It demystifis what is happening for you the parent when you and your child find your selves embroiled in a power struggle that seems disproportionate to the events at hand. It explains what is going on for you and what is likely happening for your child. Part of it is written for the lay person and part for those interested in the neurobiology of what is occurring. Reading either or both parts should lead you to a personal "aha" moment. It's great as a parenting guide and is informative regarding your own childhood especially if you feel there were unresolved issues between you and your own parents.

These are just a few of the striking examples of versatile animal behavior which, to Harvard zoologist Griffin ( Animal Thinking ), suggest that animals are cognizant of objects and events and experience conscious thoughts. In an involving, important, scholarly report that should force a reconsideration of animal studies, Griffin reviews animals' remarkable adaptability to novel challenges and their apparent ability to communicate thoughts to others. Drawing on a wealth of published research, he infers manipulative behavior in apes and foxes, fear in mantis shrimp, deception in fireflies and dreams in sleeping birds. This well-documented, understated argument presents a challenge to the reductionism of many behaviorists and cognitive psychologists.

Griffin is eminently qualified to write about the latest developments in the field of animal cognition. His previous books on the subject include The Question of Animal Awareness ( LJ 12/1/76) and Animal Thinking ( LJ 5/15/84). Griffin intends Animal Minds to "be a representative sampling of the wide range of scientific and scholarly opinion about animal minds," and he succeeds admirably. He contends that the significance of animal consciousness falls into three categories--philosophical, ethical, and scientific--and he provides extensive discussion and examples of each type. Some of the most interesting and thought-provoking examples are to be found in the chapters on communication as evidence of thinking and on deception and manipulation. While this is definitely not casual reading and will appeal primarily to students and professionals in animal cognition, the dedicated general reader will find much to think about here.

Unsophisticated interpretation of important evidence

Griffin, one of the founding fathers of cognitive ethology, summarizes the best scientific evidence that animals have a rich mental life that involves thought, intentionality, and consciousness. He focuses on three phenomena: the versatility and adaptiveness of animal behavior, nervous system physiology, and animal communication. To his credit, Griffin is not dogmatic; he admits that much scientific work remains before any of the evidence can be considered significant, and he is willing to consider interpretations of the data that reject his own views on animal minds.
In the end, unfortunately, Griffin's impassioned claims about behavior that "indicates" complex thought don't go far enough. The book consists of relatively undetailed reports of animal studies. He provides little detail about scientific methodology and does not develop an adequate theoretical framework for a deep understanding animal mentality. He has no clear methodology for interpreting the strength of the data he summarizes, and consistently conflates important distinctions between perception, consciousness, and self-consciousness. Although Griffin champions an interdisciplinary approach to solving problems of mind, he pays little heed to the many philospohical problems with understanding crucial mental concepts.
Committed defenders of animal minds will enjoy this general retrospective by one of their intellectual heroes. Readers who want a deeper exploration must turn elsewhere -- Collen Allen and Marc Bekoff's *Species of Mind* would be an excellent starting point.

AN INTERESTING SURVEY OF RESEARCH INTO THE MINDS OF VARIOUS ANIMALS

Donald Redfield Griffin (1915-2003) was an American professor of zoology at various universities who did seminal research in animal behavior, animal navigation, acoustic orientation and sensory biophysics.

In the Preface to this 1992 book, Griffin states, "This book will review evidence of versatile thinking by animals, and of equal significance will be a representative sampling of the wide range of scientific and scholarly opinion about animal minds. This spectrum of strongly advocated views demonstrates the basic importance attached to the nature of animal mentality by both scientists and philosophers." In the first chapter, he elaborates, "The aim of this book is to reopen the basic question of what life is like, subjectively, to nonhuman animals, and to outline how we can begin to answer this challenging question by analyzing the versatility of animal behavior, especially the communicative signals by which animals sometimes appear to express their thoughts and feelings."

He points out that "Adaptiveness is a completely separate matter from the possibility of conscious thinking. Because mantis shrimp are crustaceans a few centimeters in length, it is assumed a priori that they cannot possibly be conscious." (pg. 200) After reviewing the various "Ape Language" experiments, he says, "On balance, it now seems clear that apes have learned to communicate simple thoughts."

He concludes on the note, "I am confident that with patience and critical investigation we can begin to discern what life is like, subjectively, to particular animals under specific conditions.... Because mentality is one of the most important capabilities that distinguishes living animals from the rest of the known universe, seeming to understand animal minds is even more exciting and significant than elaborating our picture of inclusive fitness or discovering new molecular mechanisms."

I enjoyed it.

I recently read this book for a class, and found it very readable. Granted, it doesn't go as far into interpretations of what all of this means, and more leaves that up to the reader. Try the book Animal Consciousness by Daise and Michael Radner if you want to go more into the philosophical, and not a run through of animal behavior. It will also help you, in addition to this book, come to your own informed conclusions about the reality of animal consciousness and thought.

This book is a must have for anyone researching the calcium phosphates. Nowhere else will you find such an extensive source of information on their preparation, structure, properties, transformations, spectroscopy, diffraction and other analyses. The section on biological and non stoichiometric apatites is extremely informative and the standard XRD patterns are a particularly useful reference. The section on apatite cements could do with updating.

real support for the migraine soul

Andrew Levy eloquently conveys the inner world of a migraine sufferer. It was interesting to read about the many historical figures who suffered migraines, but as one who has read just about every "headache" book, it was his personal story that reached me the most.
As migraine sufferers we can find guides to what medications might help, what foods to maybe avoid, etc, but never have I come across such a gripping, relatable account of what it's REALLY like to live with migraine.
In reading his memoir I found comfort. I also was surprised at how he would say something in words that I had felt so many times during a severe attack. I think my favorite quote is near the end of the book where he says: "The only person who loves sunlight more than someone who loves sunlight is someone who must ration it." You see, that quote would only make sense at first read to a migraine sufferer.
I hope this book finds it's way into many a migraineur's hands...and hearts, like it did mine.

Not Just for Migraineurs

Part memoir, part history, part medical journal, part literary criticism. Andy Levy weaves all of this into a book that is as entertaining as it is informational, and for those who have silently suffered migraines for years, I think that the book could provide a sort of validation that their suffering is real.

In order to combat his own severe migraines, Levy dives into the subject, reading as much as his headaches will allow him, and then parses that knowledge out to us as if telling his story could be the cure.

He provides stories about historical figures whose migraines affected (positively and negatively) their contribution to society, including the possibility that St. Paul's conversion might have been the result of severe migraine, or that Alice in Wonderland was Lewis Carroll's attempt to describe the a migraine experience.

At the heart of this book, though, is the personal account of Levy's own battle. And it is here, that the book is most poignant. It is here that Levy, the migraineur, lets down the guard and invites the reader into his world. It is here where fellow migraine sufferers can take heart and believe that their own pain is valid.

Levy points out that 12% of the U.S. population suffers from migraines. So, if you don't suffer them, you know someone who does, and this book will help you understand their daily struggle to cope with the disease.

There can be life when you have migraines.

I really liked how Andrew Levy uses his book to capture the struggles of living with migraine along with a historical journey of migraine treatments of the past. He also writes about artists and personalities throughout history who also had migraine such Virginia Wolf, Van Gogh, Freud, and even Elvis.

Living with chronic daily migraine, I was interested to learn about how migraine has influenced literature, music and even religion. I had no idea how migraine had permeated the realm of artists like Van Gogh and writers like Emily Dickinson, nor was I aware that the book "Alice in Wonderland" was about migraine symptoms experienced by the Louis Carroll.

On a personal note, Levy explores the effects migraines have on relationships, exposing the range of emotions one has to go through in trying to maintain a relationship with a loved one when you are in chronic pain.

This book really expanded my knowledge of migraines impact on the world, and it made me feel not so alone with living with this illness. It also gave me hope that there can be life and positive creativity even when you have migraines.
